New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Friday, 8/14, that New Jersey will conduct the November 3rd general election mostly through the mail. All registered voters will receive a prepaid return-postage ballot in the mail. Ballots can be returned by mail as long as they are postmarked November 3 and are received by November 10. A South Philadelphia woman has been charged in the death of a teenager whose decomposing body was found in her home earlier this year. 26-year-old Maddison Leidy has been charged with drug delivery resulting in death. She was previously arrested and charged with abuse of corpse, obstruction, and other counts. She was arrested in January 2020 when police went to her home to arrest her on a probation violation. The Christopher Columbus statue at Marconi Plaza on South Broad Street in South Philadelphia will be removed and placed in storage. The Philadelphia Art Commission met on Wednesday, 8/12, and voted 8-1 in favor of removal. The Philadelphia Historical Commission met last month and voted 10-2 in favor of removal. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office of Catholic Education has released a video that previews how the hybrid A/B learning model will work in Archdiocesan high schools for the 2020-21 academic year. All 17 high schools will be returning to school this fall using the hybrid model. The Philadelphia Public League has suspended all interscholastic athletic competition until January 1, 2021. That includes the entire School District of Philadelphia. The decision was made after Governor Wolf recommended last week that K-12 and recreational sports be postponed until January 1st. It was another violent weekend in Philadelphia. At least 22 people were shot in over 10 separate shootings across the city between Saturday night and Sunday. The Amber Alert for a young Delaware boy has been canceled after authorities found him safe in Southern California. 2-year-old Crisobal Lopez disappeared from his home in Georgetown, DE, on July 26.
