Woman Charged in Death of Teen; Penn State Changes 'Waiver' After Criticism; Phillies Retiring Allen

A South Philadelphia woman has been charged in the death of a teenager whose decomposing body was found in her home earlier this year. 26-year-old Maddison Leidy has been charged with drug delivery resulting in death. She was previously arrested and charged with abuse of corpse, obstruction, and other counts. She was arrested in January 2020 when police went to her home to arrest her on a probation violation. It was then that they discovered the body of 17-year-old Erin Schweikert in a basement storage space. Schweikert had been missing since September 2019. The cause of Schweikert's death has not been revealed. Leidy remains in jail without bail.

Penn State is walking back language in a 'compact' that students were required to sign before returning to campus for the fall semester. The university received push back from students and faculty criticizing the agreement as a forced 'liability waiver.' It stated, "I assume any and all risk of exposure to COVID-19 that may result from attending Penn State, or participating in Penn State activities, and I acknowledge that exposure or infection may result in personal injury, illness, permanent disability, or death." Students had to agree in order to access the school's online portal to register for classes and manage other services.

Penn State released a statement saying, "[W]e have heard from some concerned with language requiring students to assume the risks of exposure to COVID-19," the statement said. "Others have misinterpreted the language of the compact as a waiver of students' rights, which was neither the case, nor the intent." They reiterated, "This is not a waiver and was not intended to be. It is an acknowledgement."

The new language says, "Even with the mitigation steps taken by Penn State and my compliance with this compact, I acknowledge that Penn State cannot prevent the risks of exposure to COVID-19 that may result from attending Penn State or participating in Penn State activities."

The Philadelphia Phillies announced that they will be retiring Dick Allen's number 15 at a ceremony on September 3. Allen played for the Phillies from 1963-1977. He was a 7-time All-Star and won NL Rookie of the Year in 1964. Allen played several positions but most notably first and third. "Dick Allen burst onto the 1964 Phillies and immediately established himself as a superstar," Phillies managing partner John Middleton said. "His legendary performance on the field gave millions of fans lasting memories, and he helped cement my love for baseball and the Phillies as a young boy. The Phillies organization is thrilled to give Dick and his family this honor that recognizes his Hall of Fame-worthy career and his legacy as one of the greatest Phillies of all time."
