New Jersey Back to School; 12yo Crashes Stolen Car, Arrested; Hamilton, NJ, Racist Graffiti

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy officially announced that K-12 schools as well as colleges and universities in the state can resume in-person instruction this fall. "Today, I am signing an Executive Order officially clearing both our pre-K through 12 schools and our colleges and universities to reopen for the upcoming academic year. As many of our colleges and universities have continued offering classes during the summer, in-person instruction may fully resume immediately, should institutions so desire and so long as social distancing, among other protections, are strictly adhered to. And any student who chooses to continue remote learning must be accommodated."

This doesn't mean that all schools and districts will be opening fully in-person right away. Murphy acknowledged the diversity of needs across the state. "There is no one size fits all plan to this very difficult situation. As we have mentioned here before, we are home to nearly 600 public school districts, plus charter and Renaissance schools, non-public and parochial schools, and other specialized places of learning. Each one faces its own unique challenges, serves a unique community, and has its own unique character."

Schools planning on opening in-person must prove they meet the state's standards to keep the community safe. "Both public and non-public schools must certify to the Department of Education that they are able to meet the health and safety standards necessary to resume in-person instruction. Districts that cannot meet all the health and safety standards for safe in-person instruction will begin their school year in an all-remote fashion."

As many of our colleges and universities have continued offering classes during the summer, in-person instruction may fully resume as long as social distancing and other protections are strictly adhered to.

A 12-year-old was arrested for stealing a car and crashing into a pole in Atlantic City on Monday morning, 8/10. It happened around 10 a.m. A concerned citizen told police about a juvenile speeding in a car. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the boy refused to stop. He eventually crashed into a pole on the 600 block of Connecticut Avenue. The vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day. The boy was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property, eluding, and multiple motor vehicle summons. The boy's mother arrived at the scene. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution for non-life-threatening injuries and released into his mother's custody after being treated.

Police in Hamilton, NJ, believe they are searching for a single suspect responsible for multiple incidents of vandalism. The latest incident happened on Wednesday, 8/10, at the Ahavath Israel Congregation Cemetery at 210 Ridge Avenue. The words "Kill N***" were spray-painted in red at the cemetery. On June 11, the same words were painted at Saint Mary's Cemetery on Cedar Lane. On Aug. 3 at the Shady Brook Park and on Aug. 6 on Clover Avenue those words along with swastikas were found. Sports
The Big East Conference has postponed its fall sports season. It announced that men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, volleyball and field hockey won't be contested this fall. The Big East does not sponsor football. Men's and women's basketball is not affected at this point. Teams may still practice and hold team activities following proper guidelines. Villanova University is a member of the Big East.
