Christopher Columbus Statue to be Removed; Explosion at Sonic Drive-in; Upper Darby Trash Drop Off

The Christopher Columbus statue at Marconi Plaza on South Broad Street in South Philadelphia will be removed and placed in storage. The Philadelphia Art Commission met on Wednesday, 8/12, and voted 8-1 in favor of removal. The Philadelphia Historical Commission met last month and voted 10-2 in favor of removal. In June, groups clashed over the statue. Men holding bats and clubs stood in front of the monument to 'protect' it from vandalism and destruction. They defended Columbus' achievements and what he means to Italian-American heritage. Counter-protestors called for the removal of the statue citing controversy with his treatment of indigenous people. Mayor Jim Kenney asked the Art Commission to look into the removal of the statue because its presence was causing unsafe conditions. It will now go into storage while the city finds a home on private property. The marble statue was first erected on Belmont Avenue in Fairmount park in 1876 for the Centennial Exposition. It was moved to Marconi Plaza in 1976.

An explosion damaged a Sonic Drive-In in Philadelphia early Wednesday morning. It happened just after midnight on the 2200 block of Butler Street in Port Richmond. Firefighters responded to an explosion of a rear electrical box. Some of the signs near the drive-thru were damaged. No one was injured. The cause is under investigation.

Upper Darby Township continues to catch up on trash pickup after a coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak in their sanitation department. Temporary workers and a private company are working to collect the backlog of trash at the curb. Mayor Barbarann Keffer announced that residents can drop off trash at three locations. Wednesday, 8:00 a.m to 2:30 p.m. No bulk items. Must show residency.

- The Second Ward Playground at Crosley and Emerson Avenues in the Fernwood neighborhood
- Gillesie Park on the 500 block of Sycamore Avenue in the Westbrook Park neighborhood

Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Doug Pederson returned to practice on Wednesday, 8/12, after having tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19 last week. Pederson had been asymptotic after the positive test and remained away from the team for 10 days.
