Philly Public League Suspends Fall Sports; Car Crashes into Boathouse; Central Bucks Goes Digital

The Philadelphia Public League has suspended all interscholastic athletic competition until January 1, 2021. That includes the entire School District of Philadelphia. The decision was made after Governor Wolf recommended last week that K-12 and recreational sports be postponed until January 1st. The league said it could revisit this decision if recommendations from the state change. The PIAA, which oversees Pennsylvania sports, had approved the resumption of fall sports following proper guidelines before Wolf made his statements last Thursday, 8/6. The organization disagrees with the recommendation. The PIAA hopes to work with Wolf and the Department of Health and Eduction over the next two weeks. The PIAA will have another meeting in two weeks.

FULL STATEMENT
"In accordance with Governor Wolfis recommendations that were made on August 6th, the Philadelphia Public League will be suspending all interscholastic athletic programming through January 1, 2021. If guidelines released by the Governor's office change, or are updated in a way that would allow programming to resume, we reserve the right to revisit our decision and provide further guidance on a safe return to play.

Our focus in the immediate future will be on developing a robust virtual program this fall to engage our student-athletes in a meaningful way as it pertains to NCAA Eligibility, sport leadership programming, post-secondary readiness, and health and wellness programming, in addition to creating a plan to provide individualized skill building and fitness workouts when permitted to resume safely.

We recognize the important role that interscholastic athletics play both on and off the field, and in the lives of our student-athletes, coaches and our school communities, but it is the health safety of those groups and their families that are paramount to our district.

We will continue working with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association in an effort to develop alternative schedules to provide a safe and healthy return to play for all our sports, when recommended to do so by the Governor's office. The Philadelphia Public League is committed to work to ensure all of our student- athletes have the opportunity to participate in their chosen sport."

A car crashed into a historic boathouse on Boathouse Row early Monday morning, 8/10. It happened around 1 a.m. at the Penn Athletic Club. The driver lost control on Kelly Drive, went across the running path, through some bushes out front and crashed into the house. The collision cause minor damage to the building. The driver eventually turned up at Temple University Hospital with minor injuries. No word yet on if he would face any charges or why he lost control.

Central Bucks School District announced that it will start this school year with “100% online instructional model for all students, grades K-12.” The virtual schooling will last through at least the first marking period (November 11). CBSD says they do not have the proper staff available to open schools safely. School Superintendent John Kopicki made the announcement in a statement on the school district's website. (see below). He stated that the school district had been working to bring students back in-person, but that safety was a priority.

Kopicki shared results from a survey asking parents for their instructional preferences. The elementary schools split: 49% In-person 25% Hybrid and 26% Online. The secondary schools split: 89% hybrid and 19% online. Kopicki said that the school district does not have enough teachers or staff available to safely accommodate that many students selecting the in-person or hybrid models. He notes that faculty are facing the same everyday troubles as everyone else trying to manage life and work during the pandemic. The CBSD will be working to hire more personnel before November. Central Bucks is the third largest school district in the state.
