Archdiocese Previews Hybrid Model Video; PA Community Spread Dashboard; Abington Murder-Suicide

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office of Catholic Education has released a video that previews how the hybrid A/B learning model will work in Archdiocesan high schools for the 2020-21 academic year. All 17 high schools will be returning to school this fall using the hybrid model. The school population will be split in half, with each group attending in person either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. When a group is not at school, they will be participating in class virtually. Cameras are installed in classrooms so students at home can see, hear, and participate in lessons in real time. The schools will also use a learning management system (LMS) utilizing Schoology. Mr. Bill Brannick, Director of Technology demonstrates a working preview of the hybrid A/B mode of operations in the video below.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has released a "COVID-19 Early Warning Monitoring System Dashboard" to help school districts determine when it is safe to return to in-person instruction. The dashboard gives guidance on the level of "community spread" of coronavirus COVID-19 on a county level. Counties are given a rating of 'low', 'moderate,' or 'substantial' based on a combination of the incidence rate per 100,000 people and the PCR percent positivity. The state recommends school districts evaluate using in-person, hybrid, or full remote models based on the level of community spread in their area. Data will be refreshed weekly. All counties in the Southeastern Pennsylvania area are in the 'moderate' rating for community spread which recommends hybrid or fully remote learning, but not in-person. Some local school districts are rethinking their reopening plans since the dashboard was released.

Police say that a husband shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide in Montgomery County. The Montgomery County District Attorneyâ€™s Office said bodies were discovered on Monday, 8/10, at the Meadowbrook Apartments in Abington Township on the 800 block of Meadowbrook Drive. Police were called by apartment management after receiving complaints of an odor. 47-year-old Terence W. Cheatham and his wife 43-year-old Nadege St. Preux were discovered inside. St. Preux suffered multiple gunshots to the head while Cheatham had one shot to the head. Investigators believe they were in the apartment for several days. District Attorney Kevin R. Steele said, "My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim," he said in a statement. "This is yet another domestic violence or relationship homicide in Montgomery County this year. If you are living in a violent situation at home, please call for help." Sports
The Philadelphia Eagles have activated RT Lane Johnson off the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Johnson was placed on the list on July 29. He previously disclosed that he had tested positive for coronavirus.

The Big Ten Conference announced on Tuesday, 8/11, that they will be postponing the fall sports season, including football. They will look to hold those sports in the spring. Penn State is part of the Big Ten.
