Temple Pauses In-Person Classes After COVID Cases; Philly Warns Students: Don't Gather; PCL Canceled |

Temple University announced on Sunday, 8/30, that it will 'pause' in-person classes for two weeks after identifying 103 active coronavirus COVID-19 cases on campus. The school says that most of those cases are asymptomatic and a few have mild to moderate flu-like symptoms. They say that new cases seem to be attributed to small social gatherings off campus. A mural of the late Philadelphia Sgt. Robert Wilson III in Cobbs Creek was defaced with anti-police graffiti. The mural is located on the 6000 block of Baltimore Avenue. Vandals spray painted the mural with the acronyms "ACAB" and "FTP" as well as a "circle-A" anarchy symbol. Sgt. Wilson was killed by armed robbers while inside a GameStop store in North Philadelphia on March 5, 2015. He died while protecting the other customers. Philadelphia Police are investigating after an off-duty security guard was shot at a Wawa during an altercation about social distancing in the store. It happened around 4:45 a.m. Friday, 8/28, on the 1300 block East Erie Avenue in the Juniata section. Two mothers were killed and a teen injured after a car lost control and struck them while walking on the sidewalk in West Philadelphia on Wednesday night, 8/26. Philadelphia officials unveiled a new mural above the entrance to the Municipal Services Building across from City Hall in Center City. The painting was created in conjunction with the Mural Arts program. Artist Russell Craig says, "I came up with the crown design. Corona translates to English, crown. The National NAACP will be taking over the Philadelphia chapter after Philly's President Rodney Muhammad posted an anti-Semitic meme to Facebook last month. Registration is now open for Philadelphia's new free Access Center program. The School District of Philadelphia is starting this academic year fully digital. The program is designed for vulnerable families where the caregivers work outside the home and do not have or cannot afford childcare. The Philadelphia Catholic League has decided not to hold a Fall Sports season for 2020. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia made the announcement on Monday, 8/24. This affects the 17 Archdiocesan high schools in the Greater Philadelphia area. La Salle and St. Joe's Prep compete in the Catholic League, but are not Archdiocesan schools.
