Registration Open Free Student Access Centers; PHLConnectED 211 Hotline; Gov Wolf Legalize Marijuana

Registration is now open for Philadelphia's new free Access Center program. The School District of Philadelphia is starting this academic year fully digital. The program is designed for vulnerable families where the caregivers work outside the home and do not have or cannot afford childcare. There will be 32 Access Centers across the city each serving around 22 students. You must register to be included in the program. Students have to be in K-6 grade. They will be located at recreation centers, libraries, Philadelphia Housing Authority sites, and community-based organizations. Students will be able to participate in their daily digital learning time while at the center. Meals will also be provided. The program starts on September 8 and will operate from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Philadelphia officials have also launched a hotline with information to help K-12 families get Internet access for the upcoming academic year. Just dial 2-1-1. Press Option 1. The PHLConnectED program helps families in need connect to high-speed Internet access at home, get devices such as laptops or tablets, and provides tech support/training. The hotline is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is available in over 150 languages.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf asked state lawmakers to send him a bill legalizing the use of recreational marijuana. Wolf wants to use some of the tax revenue generated to repair "the harm done to crime victims and communities as a result of marijuana criminalization." About half of the revenue would also go to help historically disadvantaged businesses. Wolf signed the law authorizing medical marijuana back in 2016. However, the General Assembly is unlikely to pass such legislation before the end of this year's session.
