Philly Police Hero Mural Vandalized; Wawa Shooting Suspect in Custody; Police Overtime Fee Rescinded

A mural of the late Philadelphia Sgt. Robert Wilson III in Cobbs Creek was defaced with anti-police graffiti. The mural is located on the 6000 block of Baltimore Avenue. Vandals spray painted the mural with the acronyms "ACAB" and "FTP" as well as a "circle-A" anarchy symbol. Sgt. Wilson was killed by armed robbers while inside a GameStop store in North Philadelphia on March 5, 2015. He died while protecting the other customers. City crews will be out on Monday morning to remove the graffiti.

"I'm saddened and angered that vandals would deface the mural of one of our beloved heroes, Sgt. Robert Wilson III," McNesby said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wilson family on this sad day. Wilson served our great city with passion and compassion and is sorely missed by his friends and colleagues in the Philadelphia police department. Rest easy, Robb," said FOP President John McNesby.

UPDATE: There is now an $11,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the vandalism.

Philadelphia police have a suspect in custody for the shooting at a Kensington Wawa over social distancing. The 22-year-old male suspect was arrested on Friday night, 8/28, and charged with attempted murder and related charges. It happened around 4:45 a.m. Friday inside the store on the 1300 block East Erie Avenue in the Juniata section. The suspect tried to enter the store, but was told by a Wawa security guard to wait because the store was at capacity. The suspect began to argue with the guard and the confrontation escalated. A 25-year-old off-duty security guard, who doesn't work at Wawa, happened to be a customer in the store and stepped in to help. The altercation spilled into the vestibule and the off-duty guard was shot once in the chest. The victim has been identified by family members as Khalil Patterson. The suspect fled before being tracked down by police. Patterson was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

18-year-old activist Emily Gil organized a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in her town of Englewood Cliffs, NJ, in July. She said the July 25th demonstration held next to police headquarters drew about 30 people. She notified town officials ahead of time the the event was happening, and the city decided it would require a police presence 'to protect the protest and the citizens.' Gil was surprised to receive a bill from Mayor Mario Kranjac for $2,499.26 "for the police overtime caused by your protest." Mayor Kranjac said that it was standard and routine to charge private events for police overtime. "As with any privately-sponsored event that takes place in the borough requiring police safety, an invoice was sent to the organizer for police overtime since it would be unfair to require our residents to financially support a private event," he said. However, after reviewing the situation, Mayor Kranjac has rescinded the bill.
