Arlene Ackerman's Mouth May Cost Her Money

Arlene Ackerman may have put her payday at risk by opening her mouth on the radio and criticizing Philadelphia school officials. Her $905,000 separation agreement stipulated she would not make malicious public comments or disseminate any private information about the School Reform Commission. Yet, three days after she was out, Ackerman lambasted CFO Michael Masch on WURD-AM. With $500,000 of public money at stake, she could be in violation of her exit agreement and risks losing the money.Read More

New Jersey Disaster Area---Fed Funding to North Jersey counties

Due to Hurricane Irene, parts of New Jersey were declared a federal disaster area this week. Federal funding is available to people in Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic, and Somerset Counties.

More than 150,000 homes and businesses in the state remained without electricity Wednesday afternoon, with utilities predicting restoration by the weekend or early next week.

Philadelphia's Reading Viaduct Elevated to Public Park Status

The old Reading Viaduct, becoming a city park? Talks have been going on for eight years to get city officials on board with the idea. Now, the city is in talks with Reading International Co. to take control of the larger section of the viaduct to transform it into an elevated public park.

Meanwhile, the Center City District is working with SEPTA on a legal agreement to create a park on the shorter section of the viaduct owned by the transit agency.

Hurricane Irene's final statistics are still being calculated, but so far over 20 deaths resulted from the Atlantic storm. Over 1 million people lost power and many are still under floodwaters. Up to eight inches of rain were recorded in the Philadelphia area. The Schuylkill, crested today at 13.56 feet. Philadelphia AM radio station WHAT 1340 went off the air this morning and remained off the air all day. No station identification, nothing. Just hours of silence. The eerie void signaled the station is not returning to its Standards music format of 4 years and is preparing to go in a different direction.

The entire Philadelphia area, Delaware, and South Jersey is under Hurricane or Tropical Storm Warnings. Hurricane Irene is on course to reach our area Saturday night into Sunday with the eye going right up along the coast. The warnings mean that all areas will experience powerful winds up to hurricane forces 74+, heavy rains 4-10 inches, widespread flooding, and tidal flooding and storm surge near the coastal areas. Based on the track of Hurricane Irene and anticipated sustained high winds, heavy rains, and the potential for severe flooding, downed trees, and wires SEPTA service will be suspended between 12:30 a.m. and 12 Noon, Sunday August 28.
