Philadelphia Loses a Radio Station

Philadelphia AM radio station WHAT 1340 went off the air this morning and remained off the air all day. No station identification, nothing. Just hours of silence. The eerie void signaled the station is not returning to its Standards music format of 4 years and is preparing to go in a different direction.

The Pop Standards music format, dubbed "The Greatest Music of All Time" was previously known as Martini Lounge Radio, featuring artists like Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, Tony Bennett and Michael Buble. Earlier in 2007, WHAT-AM launched an Alternative Rock format called Skin Radio.

Prior to 2007, WHAT-AM 1340 was talk station focusing on the African American community. The station was anchored by long-time Philadelphia radio personality, Mary Mason.

Both Martini Lounge Radio and Skin Radio can now be heard 24/7 on Philadelphia's internet radio station platform, iRadioPhilly.com.

AM 1340 WHAT has still remained silent after abandoning its former programming, its future format and programming and when that may emerge is still unknown. Although, the music of the Great American Songbook no longer is being carried over the airwaves, we feel that it is important that it lives on for everyone who listened or will discover the music. The music of WHAT 1340 still lives on for the listeners here on the Martini Lounge station.
