Gas Explosion and Building Collapse in South Philadelphia; 8 injured, 7 adults / 1 infant |

A natural gas explosion rocked a South Philadelphia neighborhood at around 11 this morning. The row house at 428 Daly Street was completely collapsed and the two neighboring homes were also damaged. A total of 8 people were injured; 4 adults infant, 2 children, and an infant. Seven were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and one was taken to Temple University Hospital. The house was vacant and was undergoing renovations. IT was a permitted construction site.

The USS Olympia, a one-of-a-kind steel cruiser from the Spanish American War may find a new home soon. The Philadelphia anchored ship has interest from a couple of groups that want to move the vessel and convert it into a museum. A private donor in South Carolina has pledged $34 million to the effort. Another group wants to move the Olympia to Vallejo, California north of San Francisco.

A car drove off the Kelly Drive and into the Schuykill River Sunday night around 11 p.m. near Sedgley Drive. Two passengers were in the vehicle. One of them was removed from the car and taken to the hospital. The other passenger was still missing as of 11:45 p.m. Sunday. Officals are investigating the incident.

Philadelphia born restaurateur Colin Devlin apparently took his own life after receiving disappointing news related to his dining establishments. The 42 year old Devlin's body was found about 5:30 yesterday morning at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Lehigh County. Devlin attended Temple and opened his first restaurant, "Dumont" in Brooklyn and later "DuMont Burger" both of which fell into financial difficulty. Devlin left a note and leaves behind a wife and two children.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono has picked labor leader Milly Silva as her running mate making the first all-female ticket in the state. An official announcement is scheduled in East Rutherford on Monday, the deadline for finalizing the ticket. Buono and Silva will face Republican Gov. Chris Christie and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, in the Nov. 5 election.

The body of a teenager was discovered today in the Neshaminy Creek as crews still look for two boys who went missing while swimming Tuesday night. Investigators have confirmed that the body is 18-year-old Dan Tadrzynski. His companion, 19-year-old Perry Krewson, is still missing. Krewson's uncle discovered the body in the water while on a kayak near East Bristol Road and Grove Avenue before noon and called 911. The search continues for the second teenager.

A gifted student and musical prodigy from Haverford has died at the age of 26. Stephanie Yen-Mun Liem Azar (pictured) died Friday at New York Presbyterian Hospital. The cause of death is unclear. At 16 years old, she moved to Philadelphia to attend the Curtis Institute of Music. Azar entered the hospital with an aggressive pneumonia and developed massive brain swelling. Philadelphia Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect wanted in connection with the robbery of a Wawa in the Bustleton section on July 2nd. The suspect approached the employee at the cash register and asked for a pack of cigarettes. Montgomery County Register of Wills D. Bruce Hanes announced on Tuesday that he would issue marriage licenses to anyone who asked, straight, lesbian or gay. A house fire in Chester killed two children this morning. A 7 and 10 year old perished and 2 adults and a 2 year old were transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center. The child was reportedly in critical condition. The fire broke out about 6:30 this morning on the 900 block of East 15th Street and neighbors reported hearing the sounds of smoke detectors.
