Stephanie Azar Dies at 26, Forbes Top Colleges 2013, Archdiocese Property Sale

A gifted student and musical prodigy from Haverford has died at the age of 26. Stephanie Yen-Mun Liem Azar (pictured) died Friday at New York Presbyterian Hospital. The cause of death is unclear. At 16 years old, she moved to Philadelphia to attend the Curtis Institute of Music. Azar entered the hospital with an aggressive pneumonia and developed massive brain swelling. Just 4 weeks before her death, she married computer Scientist Pablo Azar who she met at Harvard University.

Forbes has released its annual list of top colleges in the United States and several schools in our region made the list. Princeton is ranked #3. #6 on the list is Swarthmore College, the University of Pennsylvania is #11, Bryn Mawr College is #40. At #43 is Haverford College and Lafayette is at #48. Lehigh University came in at #70, Villanova at #79, Penn State at #93. The #1 college according to Forbes is Stanford. Other area schools include Delaware #126, Saint Joseph's #227, Drexel #364, Temple #418, and LaSalle #468.

The Forbes list is compiled to evaluate and rank schools so applicants can determine the best overall quality of a school and the return they can expect for their financial investment. The rankings are based on five categories which include postgraduate success (37.5%), which evaluates alumni pay and prominence; student satisfaction (22.5%), which includes professor evaluations and freshman-to-sophomore retention rates; debt (17.5%), which penalizes schools for high student debt loads and default rates; four-year graduation rates (11.5%); and competitive awards (11.5%), which rewards schools whose students win prestigious scholarships and fellowships like the Rhodes, the Marshall and the Fulbright.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia sold a few properties yesterday and raised $995,000 for its parishes in Philadelphia and Montgomery County. The former St. Michael Business School in Kensington drew $330,000. Several bids were turned down as too low including a tract of land in Harleysville and the All Saints School and Convent in Bridesburg.
