Murder Charge after Shooting Truck Thief; Drunk Uncle Lets Nephew Drive; Regusters Trial Begins

A Philadelphia man has been charged with murder after shooting another man that he thought was breaking into his truck. It happened after 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 21st on the 4500 block of Torresdale Avenue in Frankford. Police responded to a call of a man with a gun. 56-year-old Brian Baur was waiting for police. He handed over his revolver and told them he shot the man breaking into his vehicle. Baur observed 30-year-old Richard Hull from Maple Shade, NJ on surveillance video and came outside to confront him. Baur was placed under arrest on Saturday. He faces murder and related charges. Pennsylvania's â€œCastle Doctrineâ€ permits deadly force in and around your home if your safety is threatened by an intruder.

Police in Upper Darby, PA have arrested a man for driving drunk while letting his 8-year-old nephew steer the wheel. 58-year-old Clarence W. Hairston was pulled over around 3 pm on Saturday because his blue Chevy Impala was stopped in the middle of the road and blocking traffic near Guilford and Copley Roads. Police say the vehicle was making â€œstop and goâ€ movements and almost his other vehicles. When an officer approached the car he saw the 8-year-old boy sitting on Hairston's lap in control of the wheel whilst Hairston was controlling the gas and brake pedals. A 9-year-old nephew was also in the car. Hairston was holding a 24-oz beer. He was supposed to be babysitting at the time. Hairston said to officers that â€œhe did nothing wrongâ€ and was â€œonly letting the kids go for a drive.â€ He is charged with Driving Under The Influence, Endangering The Welfare Of A Child, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Permitting Unauthorized Person To Drive and Public Drunkenness. He remains behind bars with a $15,000 cash bail.

The trial against 21-year-old Christina Regusters began today in Center City. She is accused of abducting a 5-year-old girl from her kindergarten class in West Philadelphia and then sexually abusing her. The girl was found abandoned in a playground the next morning. Regusters entered a plea of 'not-guilty' in front of the jury before opening statements. Prosecutors described a â€œnightmare come trueâ€ for the victim and family. Prosecutor Erin Oâ€™Brien described how the girl was blindfolded, was threatened by a large talking bird and how the defendant told the girl that a man was committing the abuse. Defense pointed to early descriptions of the kidnapper and how they differ from Regusters. He also let the jurors know that Regusters had also been abused and raped as a child. The victim, now 7, will testify during the trial. There is also DNA evidence found on the victim that matches Regusters and internet searches for muslim clothing and how to destroy DNA. The jury won't see evidence that she frequently watched Japanese anime of torture.
