Edward Cagney Mathews Held For Trial, Remains in Jail; HS Football Player Dies; Man Stabbed at McD's

A Mount Laurel man recently caught on viral video harassing and shouting racial slurs at his Black neighbors will remain behind bars pending trial. Superior Court Judge Terrence Cook said that 45-year-old Edward Cagney Mathews poses "high risk of danger to the community." Mathews is charged with 14 counts, including harassment, stalking, and weapons charges. He appeared remotely from Burlington County Jail and did not speak. This is not the first incident involving Mathews. Neighbors say he has been troubling the neighborhood for years. Burlington County Assistant Prosecutor Jamie Hutchinson said, "He was shooting up cars this entire time, he was throwing rocks at cars and he was smearing feces on cars. The ammunition confirms this and it's not a leap to assume that it would escalate his behavior if he was in fact released and that ammunition could be aimed at a person next time." A search warrant of his home found a slingshot, ball bearings, and drugs. The FBI matched his handwriting to a threatening note left for a Black neighbor. Mathews criminal record of 29 convictions and 11 missed court dates also played into the decision to deny him bail.

A football player for West Catholic Preparatory High School died after collapsing on the field during a scrimmage on Tuesday evening, 7/13. 16-year-old Ivan Hicks of Philadelphia was taking part in a 7-on-7 scrimmage against Coatesville High School in Chester County. He was taking a water break at approximately 5:45 p.m. when he collapsed. He was immediately given CPR and was rushed to Brandywine Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 6:43 p.m. The Chester County Coroner's Office expects to perform an autopsy on Friday to determine a cause of death. "There was no sign of external injury in this tragic unexpected death. We will be looking closely at possible cardiac causes, given what is known about sudden death in young athletes, but it's too early to draw any conclusions. Cause and manner of death are pending during our open investigation," said Chester County Coroner Christina VandePol. Hicks was a rising junior and stood 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 300 pounds. He played lineman.

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a man was found stabbed to death outside of a McDonald's in Juniata Park on Tuesday night, 7/13. It happened around 10 p.m. at the restaurant at Torresdale and East Erie Avenues. Police found 30-year-old Matthew Maguire of the 2100 block of Orthodox Street lying outside the drive-thru window. He had been stabbed in the shoulder, neck, and multiple times in the back. He was holding several dollar bills. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Maguire had been in a physical altercation with an unknown male and female. No one has been charged at this time.
