| 2 Charged w/ Bear Spray of Capitol Officer; 2yo Girl Murdered by Godmother; More Philly Schools Open |

Two men have been charged with assaulting U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick with bear pray during the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6. 39-year-old George Tanios of Morgantown, West Virginia, and 32-year-old Julian Khater of State college, Pennsylvania, were arrested on Sunday 3/14. Capitol Police say that Officer Sicknick died "while physically engaging with protesters." He collapsed that day and died in the hospital the next day. His exact cause of death has not yet been determined. The medical examiner is awaiting toxicology results. Initially, authorities believe that he died because he was hit on the head with a fire extinguisher, but now they think he may have ingested a chemical substance, such as bear spray. Tanios and Khater were seen on video spraying the deterrent at Sicknick and other officers. Sicknick was originally from South River, New Jersey.

Two women have been arrested in the 'horrific' beating death of a 2-year-old girl found unresponsive in a Tacony home last Thursday, 3/11. 32-year-old Yaritza Cirilo-Fuentes, the girl's godmother, and Helen Smith, a babysitter who lives at the house, have been charged with murder. Cirilo-Fuentes had primary custody of the girl. Medics were called around 2 p.m. to the the 6300 block of Marsden Street to a report of a child having trouble breathing. They took her to St. Christopher's Hospital where she died. The district attorney's office say that the child had "open wounds that seemed to be pretty old." She had bruises on the back of the head and forehead. The abuse seemed to be "going on for a long period of time." Assistant District Attorney Chesley Lightsey said, "I can't imagine that there would ever be a motive that could be understood or sort of dissected from an adult person who would torture a 2-year-old."

The School District of Philadelphia opened 45 additional schools on Monday, 3/15, to in-person classes for PreK-2nd Grade students. The students will be operating on a hybrid schedule with 2 days in school and 3 days virtual. The first 53 schools opened last Monday, March 8. The school district is opening the buildings in waves as they are approved through a mediation process with the teacher's union. The school district announced the next 35 schools that will open on Mach 22 (see the list below).
They also announced that they will reopen the Learning Model Selection Process from March 16-23. Families selected their preferences last fall. Currently, only families that chose the hybrid model are going back to school. If you chose 100% digital last year, you will now have the opportunity to change your preference to hybrid. Each school will send parents a link to make the changes. If you do not do anything, then your preference will stay the same. Hybrid families can go back to 100% all digital at any time.
