One Pennsylvanian Dead, 12 Arrested in Capitol Riot; Delco Cyberattack Report; Philly Museums Reopen

A Pennsylvania man is among four who died in the Wednesday, 1/6, riot at the U.S. Capitol involving Trump extremists. 50-year-old Benjamin Phillips, a web developer from Bloomsburg, suffered a stroke during the mayhem. (pictured) He had organized a bus from PA to DC for the rally. 55-year-old Kevin Greeson from Athens, Alabama, suffered a heart attack. 34-year-old Roseanne Boyland from Kennesaw, Georgia, was 'trampled in the Rotunda' according to her family. The police said she was 'crushed' by the mob. 35-year-old Ashli Babbitt, a 14-year Air Force veteran from San Diego, was shot and killed by Capitol Police inside the Capitol. One Capitol police officer is in critical condition, many more are injured.

UPDATE: U.S. Capitol Police report that Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick died Thursday night, 1/7, due to his injuries. He sustained injuries to his head Wednesday afternoon, 1/6, engaging with rioters at the Capitol. Sicknick was originally from South River, New Jersey.

D.C. Police arrested 68 people and Capitol Police arrested 14 on Wednesday. Twelve of those arrested were from PA and one was from NJ. Most of the arrests were for curfew violation. A citywide curfew was enacted for 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. following the riot. The other arrests were for unlawful entry, crossing a police line, carrying a pistol without a license, suspicion of defacing public property, and assaulting a police officer. More arrests and charges are expected as the investigation continues and persons are identified from photos and video. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information on a suspect wanted for placing pipe bombs.

Delaware County officials gave an update at a council meeting, 1/6, on this past fall's cyberattack on county computer systems. County Executive Director Howard Lazarus and Chief Information Officer Frank Bilotta issued a memorandum to council that contains a summary of what happened. They say that a 'phishing' attack in the form of an e-mail to an employee first brought malware into the system. Once downloaded, the malware "captured credentials and infiltrated the network." Between September 10 and November 21 the hacker was able to access the system. At some point, the hacker activated a "ransomware" application that blocked access to the system and demanded money to release control back to the county. County officials contacted authorities including their insurance and legal teams. It was determined that the county would pay the ransom so they could quickly regain access to critical systems. It was reported last month that the ransom paid was $500,000. Delaware County is only liable for the $25,000 deductible on their insurance policy. Once the ransom was paid, they received a "key" to unlock the system and regain control. The county is currently working to rebuild the systems and ensure that everything is secure.

After being closed throughout the holiday season, many art and cultural institutions in Philadelphia are preparing to reopen to the public. Some restrictions were lifted in the city and commonwealth earlier this week. Museums and galleries are allowed to open while following mitigation requirements. You must wear a mask and practice social distancing. Expect capacity restrictions. Some museums may have timed-tickets to manage capacity so check online before you go.
