Andrei Doroshin, CEO of Philly Fighting COVID, Admits to Taking Home Vaccine Doses on 'Today'

The CEO of Philly Fighting COVID admitted to taking doses of coronavirus vaccine doses home and administering them to friends. Andrei Doroshin, a 22-year-old Drexel graduate student, told NBC News 'Today' on Thursday, 1/28, that he took four doses of the vaccine and personally administered it to four of his friends. He said they were left over from the mass vaccination clinic at the Pennsylvania Convention Center last weekend and that the "doses were about to expire." Doroshin told 'Today' that they "called everybody (they) knew, every single person" to find a high-risk person before giving the doses to his friends. Doroshin said, "I am not a nurse. I have undergone our internal certification." He agreed he was not qualified to administer the vaccine. "I understand I made that mistake. That is my mistake to carry for the rest of my life. But it is not the mistake of the organization," Doroshin said.

A registered nurse, Katrina Lipinsky, working at the clinic, posted on Twitter that she saw Doroshin take vaccine doses with him (see below). "I saw earlier today a claim in a tweet that the organization might have diverted some doses. If that's true, that's very disturbing, they shouldn't do that," Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley said during a press conference on Tuesday, 1/26. "As you know, we've stopped our relationship with this organization. But we're going to try to do what we can to find out if there were any missing doses and, as I said, we will not be working with that organization in the future." The Philadelphia District Attorney's office and the Pennsylvania Attorney General announced they were looking the whole situation.

Philadelphia cut ties with Philly Fighting COVID on Monday, 1/25. The Department of Public Health decided to end the partnership after PFC changed from a non-profit to a for-profit. Part of that changeover resulted in an update to PFC's privacy policy. The city said the new policy would allow PFC to sell data collected from its website, including personal data from vaccine registrations. PFC says it never has nor intended to sell data and has since updated the language in their privacy policy to reflect that. They say the change in corporate structure allows the organization to raise more money to fund more vaccination clinics. Philly Fighting COVID started last spring. They first were 3D printing PPE face shields for healthcare workers. They then opened testing clinics before transitioning to vaccine clinics. The first clinic vaccinated almost 7,000 people. Doroshin said that there were 100 doses leftover and they found 96 qualified recipients.

As an RN who volunteered to give vaccines for them I feel super shitty about my complicity in this mess. I was there Saturday - Andrei Doroshin, the CEO at Philly Fighting COVID, took home a ziplock bag-full of vaccines. Stuffed them in his bag and left with them.
