Philadelphia Restaurants to 50% on Oct 2; First Black Female Battalion Chief; Early Voting Begins

Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley announced on Tuesday, 9/29, that Philadelphia restaurants will be able to operate at 50% capacity starting Friday, October 2. Restaurants in the rest of the state were able to start operating at 50% last week on September 21. All restaurants must go through a 'self-certification' process in order to increase their capacity from 25%. That process is laid out on the Open & Certified website. That must be completed by October 5. Farley also said, "A diner at one table has to be more than 6 feet apart from a diner at another table. Tables themselves can have 4 or fewer seats, no more than four." Servers must wear face masks and shields. There can be no bar seating. Alcohol can only be served alongside a meal. He also encourages restaurants to improve ventilation systems.

The Philadelphia Fire Department promoted the first Black woman in it's 149-year history to the rank of Battalion Chief. Philadelphia Fire Captain Lisa Forrest of Ladder 24 in West Philadelphia was promoted to Battalion Chief at a ceremony on Tuesday morning, 9/29. It was held outside the Fire Administration Building on Spring Garden Street. Forrest has been with the department for 16 years.

Early voting began in Philadelphia on Tuesday, 9/29. The City opened six satellite election offices plus City Hall to process early voting. There will be eight more locations opening in the future. Voters can go to any of the locations. You'll be able to register to vote (if not already registered), request a mail-in ballot, immediately receive the ballot, vote, put the ballot in the envelopes, and return the ballot. The entire process is completed on site in one trip. There were already lines at some satellite offices before they opened at 11:30 a.m. There were reports of technology problems from the start. Pennsylvania's voter database was down this morning until about 12:45 p.m. stalling the process. You can also return your completed mail-in ballot at these locations. If you already requested a ballot, wait for it to come before you try to vote early in-person. If your requested ballot doesn't arrive by October 6, you may visit a satellite office and request a new ballot in person.

Sports
La Salle University announced that it would be dropping 7 varsity sports following the upcoming seasons. Those sports include baseball, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis, men's water polo, softball, volleyball and women's tennis. The Explorers sponsor 25 sports. They will now sponsor 18, which they say is the NCAA average. "Our resources and support services for our student-athletes are stretched too thinly across too many sports teams," La Salle says in a statement. "It's important to note that this is not a cost-cutting decision, but rather a strategic effort to reallocate our investment in a way that better aligns with our student-centered mission." This decision affects 130 student-athletes on the various teams. All athletic scholarship aid will be honored through graduation at La Salle. The university will also help any student transfer credits and NCAA eligibility to another school if they chose.
