| Gov Tom Wolf Vetoes Bill Giving Schools Power; Large Delaware Drug Bust; Lucy The Elephant Airbnb |

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf vetoed a bill that would give individual schools and school districts sole authority on how to conduct athletics this school year including fan attendance. The legislation gives local control over games, scrimmages, and other in-person extracurricular activities. School districts could also determine their own safety protocols and crowd limits. There is a state wide gathering limit of 25 person indoors and 250 persons outdoors. Democrat Wolf said at a press conference, "There's a virus out there, and that virus really likes it when you bring a lot of people together. That's what we know, and so you ignore that at your peril. Yeah, you could ignore reality, but the reality really is that the virus is out to get us." The bill was approved by both chambers of the GOP-controlled General Assembly by veto-proof two-thirds majorities. Lawmakers are expected to hold votes to override Wolf's veto.
Delaware State Police and the FBI announced the arrests of 28 individuals on Monday, 9/21, as part of "Operation No Mas." Those individuals were charged with 252 felonies including criminal racketeering, conspiracy, drug dealing and more. They were part of the Luis Renteria drug organization. Renteria faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. They seized at least $5 million worth of fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, LSD, marijuana, and Xanax. "Included in these results was the largest fentanyl seizure by Delaware law enforcement in the state's history, making a major dent in the supply of fentanyl that would have been distributed on the streets of Newark and surrounding areas," said Jennifer Boone, special agent in charge of the FBI's Baltimore field office. "Alone, the quantity of fentanyl seized could have killed thousands and thousands of people." Lt. Robert Jones of the Delaware State Police said, "It was enough fentanyl to kill 750,000 Delawareans." They also seized a large number of weapons and cash.
"The amount of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin, drug money and guns seized in this sting has saved lives and will save lives - point blank. The actions of these narcotics enterprises have ripples stretching across our region and at times across the nation. Disrupting them helps disrupt a drug trade that I and everyone else here today can attest breeds violence in Delaware and elsewhere," said Delaware Attorney General Kathleen Jennings. The New Castle County Police Department, Wilmington Police Department, and Philadelphia Police Department were also involved.
Lucy the Elephant in Margate, NJ, will be hosting Airbnb guests this week after being postponed 6 months due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Last winter, the nonprofit Save Lucy Committee put the 138-year-old wooden elephant up on Airbnb as part of a special promotion. The three separate nights in March were booked in seconds. However, coronavirus came and closed everything down. The attraction has been open this summer and now indoor dining is back in New Jersey. The three special guests will take over Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Special cleaning crews will sanitize between guests. No one has slept overnight since 1902. It will reopen to the public on September 28. "We'e absolutely thrilled that it's finally going to happen," said Rich Helfant, the nonprofit's executive director. "We're glad we're able to do it now because the weather is still perfect and guests can still experience much of the Jersey Shore with the guidelines in place."
