Charges Against Fmr Minnesota Ofr Kim Potter; Bucks Co Prosecutor Resigns; Crew Member Sentenced

Charges will be filed on Wednesday, 4/14, against a former Brooklyn Center, Minnesota police officer in the shooting death of a man during a traffic stop on Sunday, 4/11. Washington County Attorney Pete Orput says that former officer 48-year-old Kim Potter will be charged with second-degree manslaughter for killing 20-year-old Daunte Wright. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years. Prosecutors will have to prove that death was caused "by the person's culpable negligence whereby the person creates an unreasonable risk, and consciously takes chances of causing death or great bodily harm to another." They don't necessarily have to show intent.

Wright was pulled over for an expired registration. Officers then determined he had an open warrant. As police tried to take Wright into custody, he jumped back into his car. On police body camera footage, Potter can be seen holding a weapon and heard yelling, "Taser! Taser! Taser!" She fired one shot. Wright drove off in the car. Potter immediately exclaimed on the video that she had shot Wright with her service weapon and not the Taser by mistake. Wright crashed his car a short distance away. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Potter, a 26-year veteran, resigned on Tuesday. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon also resigned.

The former First Assistant District Attorney in Bucks County who was demoted last month for working as a delivery driver while on the clock has now resigned. Gregg Shore admitted to working as a driver for DoorDash during normal workday hours. On March 18, Bucks County DA Matt Weintraub decided to demote Shore to deputy district attorney instead of fire him "in light of all of his years of public service." Shore announced he would resign on Tuesday, 4/13, effective Wednesday, 4/14. "Due to my personal circumstances, there were times that I worked a second job delivering food during the COVID pandemic. I primarily worked the job at night and on weekends. However, I made the incredibly poor decision to deliver during the workday at times," Shore said last month. He repaid the time to the county with accrued vacation time. "What he has done is indefensible, thoughtless, selfish and so stupid," Weinstraub said at the time.

A crew member of a cargo ship involved in one of the largest drug busts in the history of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has been sentenced to five years, 10 months in federal prison. The ship's engineer, 28-year-old Vladimir Penda of Montenegro, pled guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine on a vessel under U.S. jurisdiction. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials confiscated an estimated 17.5 tons of cocaine from the MSC Gayane when it was docked at the Port of Philadelphia in June 2019. The ship had previously travelled from Chile, Peru, Panama, and the Bahamas. Other crew members have also pleaded guilty to drug trafficking conspiracy charges. Unlike the other crew members, Penda was recruited into the ring while already out on the boat. At sentencing, the defense argued that he was pressured into joining the others. With nowhere to go and the threat of a global cartel, he agreed. Prosecutors said he had a choice and was paid $4,800 for it.

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed centerfielder Adam Haseley on the restricted list and recalled centerfielder Mickey Moniak from Lehigh Valley. Haseley has been placed on the restricted list for undisclosed personal reasons. Moniak was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB draft. He appeared in 8 games in 2020 going 3-14 with 4 walks.
