| Missing Pregnant Mother Dianna Brice Found; Italian-Americans Sue Mayor Kenney; House Explodes |

The body of a missing pregnant mother from Upper Darby, Delaware County, was found dead in Philadelphia late Monday night, 4/6. Philadelphia Police and Upper Darby Police confirmed that 21-year-old Dianna Brice was discovered around 11 p.m. in a wooded area near 58th Street and Eastwick Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia. She was identified by her various tattoos. Brice was several months pregnant and had a 4-year-old son at home. She was last seen leaving the K Laundry in Lansdowne with her boyfriend, 23-year-old Justin Smith, around 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 30. Smith told Brice's mother sometime that afternoon that the couple had gotten into an argument and that she had stepped out of the car and walked away. Around 5:30 p.m that afternoon, Smith's 2018 black Ford Fusion was found on fire near 59th and Florence Street in the Cobb's Creek section of West Philadelphia. There were no signs of Brice or Smith. That site is about 1 mile from where she was found. Smith is considered a person-of-interest, but is still missing. Police have not revealed how Brice died.

Councilmember Mark Squilla and several dozen Italian-American groups have filed suit against the City of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney accusing them of anti-Italian American discrimination. The cited examples include: changing Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day; removing the statue of Frank Rizzo from the MSB building; and removing the statue of Columbus from Marconi Plaza. The suit wants those changes reversed. See full suit below.
"The point of this lawsuit is no mayor, whether it's Mayor Kenney or any other mayor, should be allowed by executive fiat to start choosing which cultures are best, which ethnicities get promoted, which get disdain by the public, which statues come down just because he doesn't like it. Because today it's Mayor Kenney picking on the Italian-Americans, tomorrow it could be the next mayor picking on St. Patrick's Day, picking on Martin Luther King's Holiday," attorney George Bochetto said.
Mayor Kenney has since responded by saying, "This lawsuit is a patently meritless political ploy and will waste precious resources at a time when we are trying to both deal with devastating pandemic and work to build a safer and more equitable city for all residents."
Two men were injured when a row home in Northeast Philadelphia exploded causing the front of the building to collapse on Tuesday afternoon, 4/6. It happened around 1:20 p.m on Algard Street near Levick Street in Wissinoming. A 61-year-old man was taken to the hospital, no word on the extent of his injuries. A second man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Investigators are working for determine the cause of the explosion and fire.
UPDATE: A Good Samaritan saved the 61-year-old man from the home after it exploded. Rakym Dyer was passing by at the time. "I heard him crying and screaming so I went to help him out the best I could," Dyer said. "There was fire on the steps so I had to put the fire out on the steps first. Then I had to put him out when I went upstairs because he was on fire so I put him out with the extinguisher. Then I picked him up, put him on my shoulder and I came downstairs."

Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday, 4/6, that Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, home to the Colorado Rockies will host the MLB All-Star Game this season. The stadium last hosted the festivities in 1998. "Major League Baseball is grateful to the Rockies, the city of Denver and the state of Colorado for their support of this summer's All-Star Game," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "We appreciate their flexibility and enthusiasm to deliver a first-class event for our game and the region. We look forward to celebrating our sport's best players and entertaining fans around the world." Manfred decided to move this year's game from Atlanta in response to new voting laws enacted in the state of Georgia. The game is July 13. |
