Nailla Robinson Found, District To Blaim?; Nutter Sandy Hook Principles; Death Penalty in Venna Case

5-year-old Nailla Robinson was found early this morning hiding in a playground in Upper Darby. She was discovered by a Good Samaritan, 27-year-old Nelson Mandela Myers, on his way to 69th Street Terminal to get a bus to work. She cried out for help and was unharmed but was only wearing a t-shirt in the cold damp night. Robinson was kidnapped yesterday morning from her classroom at Bryant Elementary School in West Philadelphia by a woman wearing full Muslim garb claiming to be her mother. The School District of Philadelphia is examining how such a breakdown in procedures could have occurred. Any adult should not be able to just walk into a classroom and remove a student. All normal protocols involving ID's, the principal, and student escorts were violated. A $5,000 reward in being offered by the Fraternal Order of Police for information that leads to an arrest. The girl was blindfolded while being transported to a home. Police believe the suspect was a black female in her 20's, between 5'5"-5'6". There may have been a male accomplice. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Special Victims Unit at 215.685.3251/52/53. It has been announced that the Norristown sanitation worker Nelson Mandela Myers will receive the $10,000 reward offered by Mayor Nutter for finding the missing girl.

Philadelphia Mayor Nutter has proposed a code of conduct for gun and ammunition manufacturers, distributors, and retailers, known as the "Sandy Hook Principles." These 20 principles (see here) include stopping production and sale of assault weapons as well as rigorous background checks. Nutter urges all cities, states, and institutions to adopt these principles, especially those that hold investments in companies tied to the gun industry. If a company fails to adhere to the principles, Nutter suggests that investments be withdrawn as type of an economic sanction against them. He will propose these measures to the US Conference of Mayors this week. They are modeled after the Sullivan Principles used in South Africa during apartheid.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's office has filed it's intent to seek the death penalty against Raghunandan Yandamuri accused of kidnapping and killing a 10-month-old baby and her 61-year-old grandmother in King of Prussia last year. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and kidnapping for ransom. Satayrathi Venna, 61, who was visiting her son from India, was found dead on the floor of their apartment in their Marquis Apartment Complex on West Dekalb Pike with multiple stab wounds. The baby, Saanvi Venna, was missing. That led to a massive search, in which Yandamuri, a family friend, helped. Eventually, he confessed and led investigators to the body of the girl. The motive was a $50,000 ransom; he claims the killings were accidental. "We only seek the death penalty in limited cases, reserving it for the worst of the worst. In this case we carefully evaluated the evidence before deciding to file the notice of our intention to seek the death penalty," DA Kevin R. Steele said Tuesday. "In the two murders of Saanvi and Satayrathi there is evidence of a number of aggravating factors including: murder while the victim was being held for ransom, killing in perpetration of a felony, multiple murders, murder of a child under 12, and murder of a witness."
