Broad Street Run Now Requires Vaccination; PHL to Accept Afghan Refugees; 2 Die in Chester Car Crash

It was announced on Friday, 8/27, that all participants and volunteers in the 2021 Blue Cross Broad Street Run will need to be fully vaccinated to participate in the in-person 10-mile race. Philadelphia Parks and Recreation says the vaccination requirement is based on guidance from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. Registered runners have the option to complete the run virtually without having to be vaccinated. The race says that you will need to have completed your vaccine series by Sunday, September 26, 2021. That is two weeks from the October 10th race day. For the two dose vaccines, you would need to get the first shot very soon to be on schedule to receive the second shot in time. There will be a secure way to upload your vaccine card for verification by October 8. "The Blue Cross Broad Street Run is an annual opportunity for Philadelphians to celebrate the health and vitality of our community," said Kathryn Ott Lovell, Commissioner Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. "Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is the single most important thing any of us can do this year to keep runners and our community safe."

Philadelphia International Airport will become the second commercial airport accepting and processing Afghan refugees after Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia started this week. These flights will be commercial airlines and not the large military C-17s which are landing at Fort Dix. The baggage claim area at Terminal A East and the International Arrivals Area has been closed and will act as a screening area for the incoming refugees. Families will be assisted by refugee settlement groups like Nationalities Service Center and HIAS. The city is calling for interpreters who speak Dari or Pashto to sign up with the Philadelphia Medical Reserve Corps.

"This is a federal-led operation, and we are collaborating with the federal government in this emergency response, protecting the rights and dignity of the Afghan families arriving in the country," a City spokeswoman said. "We stand ready to provide medical assistance, housing, and connection to our diverse community of immigrant service providers who can assist with an array of social services." Mayor Kenney tweeted, "Philadelphia stands in solidarity with Afghan refugees and we look forward to providing them a safe haven in our welcoming city."

Two people were killed after their car crashed into a house and caught on fire in Delaware County early Friday morning, 8/27. It happened around 2 a.m. on the 200 block of W. 2nd Street in Chester. The driver of the car, identified by family as 45-year-old Jarue Stewart, and his unidentified passenger were both killed. The vehicle left a gaping hole in the front of the house. No one inside was injured. The homeowner said that this isn't the first time that someone drove into the house. She wants the city to put up some sort of traffic control barrier to prevent drivers from hitting the buildings. "I am petitioning the state to come down and put something there to keep people from coming directly into these houses. It's not about a house. You can buy a house. I can have this house fixed. It's about a life and the lives that we're losing behind one corner in the city of Chester," she said.
