It's the first day of school for about 134,000 Philadelphia public school students today. The teachers are teaching with larger class sizes and still negotiating over the 13 percent giveback in salary the city has requested. The school budget crisis means up to 40 students per class and fewer administrative personnel, guidance counselors, security and nurses.

A new report claims one-quarter of New Jerseyans are living in poverty. More than two million people in New Jersey are struggling to meet their basic needs. The poorest county is Passaic, followed by Cumberland, Essex and Hudson, according to the report. The report also finds that children and Hispanics have suffered the most from increasing poverty.

A NASA moon mission gets underway with a rocket launch tonight that should be viewable from the Philadelphia area, New Jersey, and Delaware. In fact much of the East Coast will get to see it blast off from the coast of Virginia. NASA says the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer, a robotic mission known as LADEE, is set to take off from Wallops Island, Va., at 11:27 p.m. tonight.

The bodies of a father and son were pulled out of the Wissahickon Creek near the Valley Green Inn at Valley Green Road and Forbidden Drive this afternoon. At around 3 pm the 13-year-old son jumped into the creek. After which 41-year-old father had jump in to rescue him. Witnesses did not see them get out of the water and called police. This area, popular with swimmers, is know as Devil's Pool. Police are still investigating.

Police in Lower Merion and Radnor are working together on a couple of carjackings in their towns. Last week at the Beaumont Retirement Center in Bryn Mawr, a resident reported his car stolen at gunpoint. Then, Tuesday evening at the Villanova train station, a woman was forced out of her Porsche Cayenne while she waited for her husband.

Police are investigating two indecent exposure incidents reported on the same block in Wilmington on the 1400 block of St. Elizabeth Street. Officers responded Tuesday night to a 911 call for a suspicious person masturbating as he looked through a neighbor’s window. The suspect fled after the resident started banging on the window.

Philadelphia Eagles players Riley Cooper and Cary Williams got into a scuffle at practice of Thursday during one-on-one drills. (video below) It took several players, including Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson and Brandon Boykin, to break up the entangled two. Williams was over heard using a racial epitaph during the scuffle. Tonight the NFL regular season kicks off in Denver Colorado. Outside the Bronco's stadium, a billboard has been put up by the reform group, The Marijuana Policy Project challenging the NFL to change its policy on pot. The message reads, "Stop driving players to drink" and promotes marijuana, now legal in Colorado, as a safer choice.

Investigators were at a Center City apartment looking for evidence connected to the discovery of a human torso found in the Schuylkill river Tuesday morning near the Grays Ferry Bridge. Police have identified the victim as a man who had been reported missing, 40-year-old Frank Zarzycki of Northeast Philadelphia. Investigators were able to identify the 40-year-old through tattoos on his torso.

Police in Wheeling, WV are looking for a third person who may have been involved in the fatal beating of a Wheeling Jesuit University student over the weekend. Two men have already been been charged with the murder of 21-year-old Kevin Figaniak of Perkasie, Bucks County, PA. 22-year-old Craig Peacock of Clewiston, Fla., and 24-year-old Jarrett Chandler of Winnfield, La. are being held on $1 million bond. Figaniak was a senior business major who played varsity lacrosse.
