David Oh To Run For Mayor of Philadelphia; Resigns From City Council

David Oh announced his candidacy for Mayor of Philadelphia on Monday, February 13, 2023. He becomes the first Republican to enter the field; 10 Democrats are also running. 62-year-old Oh resigned as Councilmember-at-large. He was elected to City Council in 2011. He is an Army veteran and former prosecutor.

"I do think it is the right time to do something different," Oh said. "And that is to take all the things I could not do on council and do that for the city as mayor."

Oh has been a champion of Philadelphia arts and music creating the PHL Live Center Stage program and the Philadelphia Music Industry Task Force. City Council approved a resolution last month to adopt the Task Force's recommendations, one of which would create a permanent Philadelphia Music Office. He was also the chair of the Global Opportunities and the Creative/Innovative Economy Committee.

Oh has also spent much time reaching out and supporting the city's diverse immigrant populations.

Oh is running to fight crime and addiction, reform eduction, create economic opportunities, clean the city, and address tax and fiscal transparency.

No Republican mayor has been elected since the Home Rule Charter of 1951. Bernard Samuel was the last GOP mayor elected in 1947. This year's primaries will be held on May 16.
