On Thursday, January 19, Philadelphia City Council approved a resolution introduced by Councilmember-at-large David Oh. Resolution 221042 is titled 'Adopting the Philadelphia Music Industry Task Force Report and Recommendations issued by Council's Global Opportunities and Creative/Innovative Economy.'

The Music Industry Task Force was formed in 2017. The task force created a report of 10 recommended actions that were adopted as part of this resolution. The first action will be to create a permanent Philadelphia Music Industry Office. The other actions seek to help promote Philadelphia as a music city and support current musicians and the scene as a whole. See the list of actions below and follow the links to read the full music industry task force report.

Recommendations

1) Establish a centralized, permanent Philadelphia Music Office or Commission to continue the work initiated by the Music Industry Task Force.

2) Develop an awareness campaign for fair compensation for working musicians.

3) Identify sources of funding for sustained, dedicated efforts to grow Philadelphia's music economy.

4) Develop and create a museum/cultural center in the Sigma Sound building to celebrate our rich music history passed and present.

5) Market the strengths of Philadelphia's rich musical history and the current boom of music venues and artists.

6) Promote Philadelphia music in the City's transportation hubs, such as Philadelphia International Airport and 30th Street Station.

7) Establish Performing Arts priority loading and unloading Zones (temporary parking areas at certain concert performance venues that will allow artists to quickly load in and out of the venues without receiving parking tickets).

8) Create hubs for music and concert promotion material distribution.

9) Encourage music performance venues to cater to all ages.

10) Utilize the City's zoning and community development policies to benefit the music industry.
