A man has been arrested for beating his elderly mother to death inside her Roxborough home on Sunday, 7/17. 59-year-old Gary Johnson is charged with murder and possessing an instrument of crime. Police responded around 1 p.m. to the 4200 block of Houghton Street. 96-year-old Bertha Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. She was suffering from blunt force trauma to the head and body. Police recovered a weapon and took her son into custody. Police say that the motive was domestic.

A man fell from an escalator and died last week at Lincoln Financial Field while attending a concert. It happened around 11 p.m. Thursday, 7/14, during a concert for The Weeknd. The 32-year-old man was sitting on the railing of an escalator when he fell approximately 40 feet. He was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The incident is under investigation.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has launched a new three-digit phone number for those experiencing mental crisis. Starting July 16, you can call or text 988 to be connected to a trained counselor. The current number, 1-800-273-8255 (TALK), will still be available. The call is free and available 24/7. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra was in Philadelphia on Friday, 7/15, to announce the nationwide launch.
