The Board of Education has selected Tony Watlington as the next Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia. Watlington will replace William Hite on June 16. Hite has served at superintendent for 10 years. Watlington reportedly will have a 5-year $340,000 contract with an option for a sixth year. Watlington has 27 years of educational experience. He is leaving his role as superintendent of Rowan-Salisbury Schools in North Carolina. That district has 18,000 students; Philadelphia has 115,000. "My number one priority is to learn the district," Watlington said. "I realize I'm not from Philadelphia and I want to take the time to learn from the staff who’s here, to learn from my parents and community, and business leaders, and the board of education, so my number one priority is to listen and learn." He plans to start taking weekend trips to the city and being participating in remote meetings.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly/Philadelphia has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Bucks County on Thursday night, 3/31, during a line of severe thunderstorms. The tornado happened around 9:48 p.m. in portions of Hilltown Township to Bedminister Township near the Route 113/313 (Souderton Road and Dublin Pike) intersection. It has been rated an EF1 with maximum winds of 100 mph. More details will be released later.

U.S. Marshals have taken a man into custody who is accused of raping a teenage girl outside of a Police Athletic League center in early March. 26-year-old Marquis Graham was arrested on Thursday, 3/31, after being found hiding in his basement on the 1100 block of W. Nevada Street. He is charged with rape, sexual assault, corruption of minors, indecent assault and related charges. It happened on March 9 around 3:30 p.m. on the 3100 block of Ridge Avenue. Graham offered a 15-year-old girl a ride to work. She accepted. Once she got into his car, Graham sexually assaulted the teen. Police identified Graham as a PAL volunteer coach, but that has not been confirmed.
