Montco DA Says No Racial/Religious Bias in North Penn Student Fight, All Charged; Sanaa Beaufort

The Towamencin Township Police Department issued a press release on Tuesday afternoon, 7/13, following their investigation into a fight between three female students at North Penn High School in the spring. It happened on May 4 in the lunchroom. 16-year-old Sanaa Beaufort, who is a Black muslim, was attacked by two white girls. During the attack, the girls tore off her hijab, a religious head covering. The police department "determined there were no indications that the fight had a racially or religiously based motivation." The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office "determined that all three of the participants would be charged with identical criminal offenses for their participation in the fight." Since they are minors, specific charges and any evidence will not be released.

The community is rallying around Beaufort hoping charges get dropped. Many gathered on the steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse to show support. That includes the NAACP Ambler Branch and CAIR-Philadelphia (Counsel on American Islamic Relations).
