Philadelphia Police have arrested a police officer's brother who is accused of assaulting a Black man during protests last June in Fishtown. 45-year-old Richard 'Richie' Goodwin is charged with assault and recklessly endangering another person. It happened on June 1, 2020, during the unrest following George Floyd's murder. Goodwin was with a group of Fishtown residents standing outside the 26th District police station on Girard Ave holding hatchets, baseball bats, and golf clubs. The vigilante group had been walking through the neighborhood and 'protecting' the police station during the protests. At one point, the victim rode past the group on his bicycle and raised his hand. Goodwin knocked him off the bike and punched him repeatedly. Goodwin is the second member of that group to be charged since last summer. The first was 37-year-old George Graf who attacked a WHYY reporter. Goodwin's brother was assigned to the 26th District.
"Our investigation has identified Richie Goodwin as the individual responsible for violently throwing a person off his bike and onto the ground, and repeatedly punching him in the head until his ear and face bled. The apparent provocation for this violent crime was that the victim - heading home after being teargassed alongside hundreds of civilians by Philadelphia Police on I-676 - had thrown his fist up in solidarity with fellow Black Lives Matter supporters in his community," District Attorney Larry Krasner said. "Just as our city and nation continue to reckon with systemic racism and injustice, the Philadelphia DA's office continues to investigate incidents of property destruction, burglary, harassment, and violence that occurred during the historic uprisings of 2020. We will not tolerate violence in the name of movement protest or in the name of 'protecting' the police."
One child was killed and several others were injured including 4 other children and 2 adults in a crash on Rt. 55 in Vineland, NJ, on Thursday, 7/8. It happened around midnight in the northbound lanes near the Garden Road exit at mile 34.6. A 36-year-old was driving a Toyota Sienna minivan with the five kids heading northbound. The minivan veered off the road, came back onto the roadway overturned, and was then struck by an oncoming Chevrolet Cruze sedan. The five children were ejected from the minivan. One of the children died. The four others sustained serious injuries. The two drivers were also injured. They were taken to Cooper University Hospital in three medivac helicopters. The accident remains under investigation.
The School District of Philadelphia and SEPTA unveiled a new contact-free Student Fare Card on Thursday, 7/8. The cards will act as SEPTA Key cards and allow students to tap the card to pay the fare. It will replace the laminated cards given to students in the past. 65,000 eligible students will be issued the cards in August. Students can use the card up to 8 times per weekday between 5:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. They will work on buses, trolleys, an subways. If a student wants to take Regional Rail, they can pay $10 per week to upgrade their card. Students at district, archdiocesan, and charter schools are eligible if they live over 1.5 miles from their school.

"We're excited to roll the student Fare Card District-wide after a successful pilot program earlier this year," said Reggie McNeil, Chief Operating Officer, School District of Philadelphia. "This transition will help reduce our carbon footprint by eliminating weekly laminated passes with the reusable plastic card. It will also provide safety measures to protect against lost or stolen Fare Cards."
