| Wawa Hoagie Day Returns to Welcome America; Dog Remains Found in Trash; Plastic Bag Ban Begins |

Wawa Hoagie Day returned to the Wawa Welcome America Fest on Thursday, July 1, after being postponed in 2020. It was scheduled to be held outside at Independence Mall and was moved inside the Constitution Center because of the threat of bad weather. About 100 Wawa employees worked from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. constructing 17,000 hoagies. 5,000 hoagies were donated to Philabundance. 2,000 hoagies were given to the Philadelphia Police Athletic League and Veterans Multi-Service Center who had a special "Heroes Lane" that opened early. The remaining 10,000 hoagies were given out to the public starting at noon.
Philadelphia Police say that remains found in a plastic bag on Thursday morning, 7/1, were that of a dog. It happened around 8:05 a.m. in the 5700 block of Harbison Avenue near Van Kirk Street. Sanitation workers found the remains in a pink bag during trash pickup. Initially, they were believed to be human remains. The medical examiner determined that they are canine. This could be a case of animal cruelty. The investigation is ongoing.
Philadelphia's ban on single-use plastic bags goes into effect Thursday, July 1. "Though the ban will be implemented beginning July 1, there will be a nine-month awareness, education, and warning period before full enforcement begins in order to provide businesses time to prepare and comply with the law," the city said. Stores must post signs about the ban by August 1. Warnings will be given starting October 1. Fines will start next April 1, 2022. The ban includes all single-use plastic bags and paper bags that aren't made of at least 40% recycled paper. There are some exceptions including multiple bags sold in packages intended for garbage, dry cleaner bags, and bags used to package bulk items, food, flowers, plants, baked goods, etc.

Philadelphia Phillies announced the honors for this year's Wall of Fame weekend. Former Phillies president and CEO David Montgomery will posthumously receive the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hall of Fame's Annual Awards Presentation on July 24 in Cooperstown, NY. The Phillies will honor him on Friday, August 6. On Saturday, August 7, Manny Trillo will be inducted into the Toyota Phillies Wall of Fame. On Sunday, August 8, the Phillies will retire Roy Halladay's #34.
"We look forward to joining our fans as we honor three remarkable men and the extraordinary impact they had on the game of baseball," said Phillies Executive Vice President David Buck. "David Montgomery, Manny Trillo and Roy Halladay are all legends in their own right, each making an indelible mark in our history. It is only fitting that our Toyota Phillies Wall of Fame Weekend be dedicated to ensuring that their incredible contributions be forever remembered and celebrated for generations to come." |
