Philly Dropping COVID-19 Restrictions June 2; NJ Lifts Mask Mandate; Building Unstable After Crash

Philadelphia officials announced on Friday, 5/28, that they are moving up the date to lift the 'Safer-at-Home' COVID-19 restrictions to Wednesday, June 2. It was previously June 11. Starting next Wednesday, there will no longer be any density limits, maximum capacity limits, or social distancing rules for anyone. The city says that it will keep the indoor mask mandate and 11 p.m. dining curfew in place until June 11. Officials say that the percent positive rate has fallen below 3% and vaccinations continue to increase. "As more Philadelphians get vaccinated, COVID cases in Philadelphia have continued to drop, and positivity and hospitalizations remain low," said Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Bettigole. "These are encouraging signs that vaccination is truly turning the tide in Philadelphia. We still have work to do to reach all Philadelphians, but we also want people to celebrate the good parts of life that we get back by getting vaccinated." The rest of Pennsylvania is dropping all restrictions on Monday, May 31.

In time for Memorial Day Weekend, NJ Governor Phil Murphy has lifted the indoor mask mandate. Vaccinated people do not have to wear a mask indoors. Unvaccinated people are still advised to continue to wear masks. "Please be responsible and do the right thing â€“ for your own safety and your community's safety," Murphy said. Businesses and other places may still require masks for all people. Murphy also lifted the 6-foot social distancing rule. This will allow for dance floors to reopen, patrons to get closer at bars, casinos, gyms, etc.

The North Philadelphia building where a fire engine crashed through on Thursday afternoon, 5/27, on its way to a fire has been called "imminently dangerous" by L+I. The building, located on the coroner of 7th and Girard, is structurally unstable. It is currently being held up with wooden boards and support beams. An L+I engineer is working with the property owner on next steps. The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. Engine 29 was heading east to a house fire near Front and Dauphin streets in Kensington with its lights and sirens on. A Toyota Avalon attempted to make a left turn in front of the truck. The engine swerved and went over the median. It then hit a parked Toyota 4-Runner before crashed through the building front and through to the other side. Four firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital. They have since been released. A civilian driving the Avalon was also taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

Sports
Since Philadelphia is lifting 'Safer at Home' restrictions on June 2, both the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Phillies will be allowed to go to 100% capacity earlier than previously scheduled. The Sixers can go to full capacity at the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday, June 2. That would be if Game 5 vs the Washington Wizards is necessary. The Phillies will go to full capacity at Citizens Bank Park on Friday, June 4 against the Washington Nationals. Tailgating will once again be permitted in lots south of Pattison Ave.
