ATF Rules St. Leo Church Fire Arson; Shooting at Vigil, 1 Dead 3 Injured; Phillies 100% Capacity

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) says that the fire that destroyed the historic St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church in Tacony on Sunday, 5/9, was intentionally set. They said that the fire was 'incendiary in nature.' The ATF and the Citizens Crime Commission are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The two-alarm blaze broke out around 5:30 p.m. on the 6600 block of Keystone Street near Unruh Ave. Heavy flames and smoke overtook the structure. It was brought under control by 7 p.m. The only thing left was its stone steeple which had to be knocked down the next day for fear it would topple. The church had been built in 1884. It was closed in 2019 and had recently been sold. The ATF, Philadelphia Police Department, and Philadelphia Fire Marshalâ€™s Office are investigating this 'crime of violence.' One person is dead and three others are injured after a gunman opened fire on a group of people gathered for a memorial of another shooting victim in Southwest Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon, 5/12. It happened around 4 p.m at 55th and Kingsessing Avenue. A group of 8-10 individuals were holding a vigil for a victim who was shot at the same location last year. They were painting a mural on the side of a corner store. The gunman walked up to the group and opened fire. A 20-year-old man was shot 11 times in his chest, torso and abdomen. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other victims include a 29-year-old, 23-year-old, and 19-year-old. They were all taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital. Police say that someone did return fire. No weapons have been recovered. No arrests have been made. Police are currently looking at surveillance video.

The Philadelphia Phillies announced their plans to return to full capacity home games at Citizens Bank Park after Philadelphia officials set dates lifting pandemic related restrictions. On Friday, May 21, they will increase capacity from 11,000 to 16,000. This coincides with the interleague series against the Boston Red Sox. On Saturday, June 12, all capacity restrictions will be lifted and 100% of the 43,000+ seats will be available. That coincides with the interleague series against the New York Yankees. The Phillies will still set aside some socially distanced pod seating for those who prefer that environment. Tailgating will be allowed again starting June 12. Masks must still be worn inside the stadium, unless actively eating or drinking. Season ticket holders will be contacted soon about their tickets. Tickets to the remaining games of the season go on sale May 25.
