The FBI raided the largest Hindu temple in the United States on Tuesday, 5/11, over allegations of forced labor and other claims made in a civil lawsuit. The temple is located in Robbinsville, NJ, near Trenton in Mercer County. It is run by the Hindu organization Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha or BAPS. The suit claims that BAPS coerced hundreds of low-caste workers to come to the US from India to help build the temple. The workers were brought in on R1 visas meant for "those who minister, or work in religious vocations or occupations." Upon arrival, their passports and visas were taken. They were forced to work from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. will few days off. They were paid $450 per month, or about $1.20 per hour. They only received $50 cash per month. The rest was deposited in their account in India. They lived in a compound on the grounds of the temple and their movements were closely monitored. The lawsuit seeks back wages and damages. The temple did employ volunteers in the past. https://youtu.be/JrScECszOF4

Philadelphia Police are investigating an unusual two part crime involving a shooting victim and a stolen vehicle. Police were notified around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, 5/10, that a stolen vehicle had been tracked down to 57th and Thomas Streets in Southwest Philadelphia. Police arrived to find the stolen SUV with a 25-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound to the neck. The victim's friend had used that person's cell phone to locate the vehicle. It started earlier that evening at Lee and Indiana Avenue in Kensington. The victim was shot and killed inside the vehicle and then someone, perhaps the shooter, proceeded to steal the car. Police found evidence of the shooting at that area in Kensington. Whoever stole the car then drove 15 miles with the shooting victim in the passenger seat before abandoning the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.

Waterford Township School District in Camden County, NJ, has closed its school buildings until May 24 after many of its staff members were sickened with an unknown illness at a luncheon last week. The luncheon was catered by an outside vendor at three different school buildings on May 6. 60% of staff members have experienced symptoms from the food borne illness. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. The Camden County Department of Health has not identified the specific pathogen but advised that it could be contagious. The buildings will be disinfected. Students will be learning virtually over the next two weeks.
