| North Penn Student Attack Possible Hate Crime; Bucks Co Hit-And-Run; Philly Cop Injured in Chase |

A North Penn High School student says she was attacked in school on Tuesday, 5/4, by two other female students because she is a Muslim. Part of the incident was captured on cell phone video (see below). 16-year-old Sanaa Beaufort, a junior and student ambassador at the Montgomery County school, was attacked as she stepped out of a bathroom into the lunchroom. During the attack, the girls tore off her hijab, a religious head covering. School security intervened to stop the fight. The dispute between the girls has been ongoing. A few weeks ago Beaufort had asked them to stop using certain slurs. The NAACP Ambler Branch believes this is a hate crime. CAIR-Philadelphia is also lending support to the victim. Beaufort is facing disciplinary action and possible suspension for participating in the fight, even though she was defending herself. She has a hearing next week. Beaufort is Black and the two attackers are white.
North Penn School District has issued a statement (full statement below) and apologized for their initial handling of the situation, "...it is apparent we could have done a better job in helping the student retrieve her hijab and support her during the situation. For this, the North Penn School District sincerely apologizes and resolves to move forward in a manner in which this is not repeated."

A Bucks County man was seriously injured after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while doing yard work on Thursday afternoon. It happened around 12:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Mill Road in Richland Township. 70-year-old John Gruver was in the front yard when he was hit. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem in critical condition. Gruver is on a ventilator with rib fractures, spinal fractures, a broken leg, and a broken arm. A Philadelphia Police officer was injured during a foot chase in North Philadelphia on Thursday night, 5/6. It happened around 7:15 p.m. on the 2400 block of Glenwood Avenue. The 22nd District officer twisted his leg and was taken to Temple University Hospital. Two suspects were apprehended. Two guns were recovered. No shots were fired.
A former Bucks County councilman that had been missing since last week was found dead. Former Morrisville councilman 55-year-old David Nay has not been since since Thursday, 4/29. Police said that he was "contending with a mental health issue" was believed to be armed. Authorities received reports on Thursday, 5/6, that his 2005 Chevy pickup truck was seen at Washington Crossing Historical Park on the 1600 block of River Road in Solebury. After finding the unoccupied truck, Solebury Township police and the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources (DCNR) Park Rangers searched the park. Nay's body was found around 1:30 p.m. with a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

The Dad Vail Regatta will return to the banks of the Schuylkill River on Saturday, May 8. It was cancelled last year due to the pandemic. This year's event will be smaller than usual. Only 45 colleges and universities will be competing instead of the usual 100. It will also take place all in one day. Usually heats are run on Friday and finals are on Saturday. This year, heats will be run on Saturday morning and finals in the afternoon. To accommodate the schedule, boats will be sent from the starting line before the previous race finishes. The regatta usually host thousands of spectators and fans, but there will be no spectators allowed this year. |

North Penn School District statement 5/6/21:
The North Penn School District continues to investigate the altercation involving three students at North Penn High School on Tuesday, May 4th, and is aware of cellphone videos of part of the incident circulating throughout social media. We take seriously the comments, reactions and feelings that are being represented by those on social media and others reaching out to the school district and school.Â
Since the altercation on Tuesday, NPSD officials have been in multiple conversations with the families involved, a representative from the NAACP Cheltenham Branch, North Penn Mosque and law enforcement. It is important that we work together during this difficult time and share with the community our steps to resolve the difficult issues at hand. We also must respect the privacy rights of the students involved. The District Administration has also apprised the Board of School Directors that an incident occurred at NPHS. Because the School Board may be required to act as an impartial hearing body in light of the potential for student disciplinary proceedings, the Board and its members are legally unable to comment on this matter out of concern for the due process rights of all students who may have been involved.
Although our investigation is not yet complete, it is apparent we could have done a better job in helping the student retrieve her hijab and support her during the situation. For this, the North Penn School District sincerely apologizes and resolves to move forward in a manner in which this is not repeated. Each year we dedicate many hours to help our staff and students grow in cultural proficiency, but we know we have much more work to do in this extremely important area.Â
Our first step in healing will be to provide an opportunity on Friday, May 7th, for NPHS students to discuss their thoughts regarding race, culture, religion, and relationships among students in a safe and open manner with school and district administration. Opportunities for tomorrow’s discussions will be provided during periods four through seven at the high school. After that, next steps will involve conversations with North Penn families and the broader community. Please know that specifics regarding the recent incident will not be discussed due to privacy laws. |
