Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin Guilty on ALL Charges in George Floyd Murder

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all charges in the death of George Floyd during an arrest on May 25, 2020. Chauvin was charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The jury deliberated for 10 hours over two days. Chauvin was caught on video along with three other officers restraining Floyd on the ground. Chauvin had his knee on the neck of Floyd for a time of 9 minutes and 29 seconds, which caused asphyxiation and death. The three other officers are separately charged and will be tried at a different date. They will be tried on charges of aiding and abetting in August.

Large scale protests and demonstrations broke out across the country following Floyd's murder last year. There were also incidents of violence, riots, looting, and unrest that went unchecked. Calls for police reform, a reduction in police funding, and even to defund the police had been brought to the forefront. The death of George Floyd also spurred action on the broader spectrum of social justice issues.

Philadelphia officials have been preparing for the verdict for several days. National Guard members have been deployed in the city and police presence has been increased. Many businesses in hard hit areas boarded up including Center City, West Philadelphia, and Port Richmond. However, at least on Tuesday night, it has been calm across the city. There have not been any large protests, and more importantly no rioting and looting.
