Local and federal authorities are joining efforts in Philadelphia to help curb the rising gun violence in the streets. Acting U.S. Attorney Jennifer Williams joined Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw to announce the joint task force called 'All Hands on Deck.' It includes Philadelphia Police, the FBI, DEA, Homeland Security, and other agencies. Shootings and gun homicides in 2021 are up about 30% from 2020's decades' high numbers. "Night after night after night, shots are fired until people are killed or injured," Williams said at the press conference. "At this rate we are on pace to pass 600 homicides here in Philly. That is shocking." The task force will share information and resources. Also, federal firearms crimes will be pursued when applicable. "Beginning this month, FBI is adding additional agents who will focus on investigating crimes with the most serious impact on victims," Williams said. "The U.S. Attorney's Office will prioritize prosecuting in federal court those responsible for gun violence. Federal sentences are measured in years, not months."
PennDOT has activated 72 new, digital variable speed limit signs and 9 queue warning signs along the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) between King of Prussia and Philadelphia. The 14-mile stretch goes from the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange in KOP to the U.S. Route 1 interchange in Philadelphia. The signs will be in a testing period until May 10 where they remain set at 55 mph in Montgomery County and 50 mph in Philadelphia. After May 10, the speed limit along the road could vary between 35 to 55 mph depending on conditions. The speed posted on the digital signs are enforceable speed limits and not just suggestions. This corridor sees 130,000 drivers every day. This is the first part of a multipart plan to revamp I-76 and surrounding arteries. Upcoming parts include converting road shoulders into 'flex lanes' to be used at times of high traffic as well as introducing metering at entrance ramps. "These devices will help reduce congestion and greatly improve safety by warning drivers of changing conditions based on real-time expressway, traffic and weather events," PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian said in the release. "This is one of the ways we are using operational strategies and technologies to actively manage travel and traffic flow along this critical corridor."
The Philadelphia School District announced that it will be offering both in-person and virtual classes this summer. Full day in-person classes for grades 1-12 will be offered at 24 schools to start, but they will have 39 buildings ready depending on how many students opt in to the program. Pre-K and Kindergarten students will have a virtual program. Current health and safety protocols will be in effect. Students will receive a backpack of supplies on the first day of classes. Breakfast and lunch will be served. There will also be extracurricular activities. The district expects 14,000 students to participate but invites all who are interested to register.
"Providing summer programs for students is proven to play a huge role in narrowing academic achievement gaps and helping students achieve and maintain grade-level performance in reading and in math," Superintendent William Hite said.

Villanova sophomore forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl has decided to forgo his remaining years at the university, sign with an agent, and declare for the NBA draft. Robinson-Earl won co-Big East Player of the Year honors this year.
On Twitter he said, "After meaningful conversation with coach Wright, family and my trusted circle, I have decided to sign with an agent and declare for the 2021 draft. That being said, the last two years at Villanova have allowed me to grow in so many ways, as both a person and as a player. I am forever grateful to coach Wright and the entire staff, my teammates/brothers, the faculty and all of Nova Nation. I thank the great Lord above for all things and for allowing Villanova to be part of his plan for me. I will continue to strive for greatness, not perfection, and bring all the tools I have learned at Villanova to guide me in this next chapter of my life. Attitude!"
