James Alexander Shot/Killed by Philly Police; Please Touch Now Open; Man Charged in Chinatown Attack

Philadelphia Police have identified the suspect shot and killed by police officers during a traffic stop and shoot out on Wednesday night, 4/7, as 24-year-old James Alexander. A police officer was shot in the foot. He is only identified as a 29-year-old man from the 35th District. It happened around 6:45 p.m. on the 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue. Police pulled over a blue Kia Optima for failing to stop at a stop sign. There were three men and one woman inside. When the officers ran their identifications, it was determined that the driver had a warrant for parole and probation violations and Alexander had an outstanding warrant for bail jumping out of Wisconsin. They called for backup officers who quickly arrived on the scene.

The driver of the car complied with officers' orders to step out of the car. Alexander was sitting in the rear passenger seat. An officer opened the door and instructed Alexander to leave his cell phone and asked if he had a gun. He pulled a Ruger .40 caliber handgun from his waistband. The officer yelled, "He's got a gun." Alexander fired at police while sitting in the car. He then stepped out and fired at least two more shots at police officers. The officers responded and hit him several times in the chest. He was pronounced dead at nearby Einstein Medical Center a short time later. A police officer was shot in the foot. He was treated and released. The three other occupants of the car were not injured, either were the other police officers.

Philadelphia's Please Touch Museum reopened to members only on Thursday, 4/8, after being closed for 58 weeks due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. The interactive children's museum in Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park will open to the public on April 22. The museum will be open Thursdays-Sundays. You must make an online reservation for either the morning session from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and an afternoon session from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. to control crowd size. There will be a break at midday to allow for cleaning and sanitizing. Masks are required for anyone ages 2+. Cleaning of props and other high touch surfaces occur during each session. Hand sanitizers will be located throughout and guests should be mindful of practicing social distancing. Carousel rides are currently free. Water fountains and fill up stations are closed as is the coat room.

A Philadelphia man has been charged with ethnic intimidation and other offenses after he attacked an Asian-American man while shouting anti-Asian remarks in the Chinatown neighborhood earlier this week. 30-year-old James Foster is charged with ethnic intimidation, terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and harassment. It happened around 7:40 p.m. on the 300 block of North 10th Street. Police received multiple calls about a suspect attacking a 64-year-old man. He was yelling, "You gave me coronavirus." Police Tased Foster twice before taking him into custody. The victim was not injured.
