| Road Rage Shooter Arrested in NC; SEPTA Somerset Station to Open; 2 Philly Cops Charged |

Police in Robeson County, North Carolina, have arrested a man wanted for shooting and killing a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, woman in a road rage incident on I-95 last week. 29-year-old Dejywan R. Floyd of Lumerton, NC, is charged with first-degree murder and discharging a weapon into an occupied property in the death of 47-year-old Julie Eberly of Mannheim, Pennsylvania. He was arrested just after midnight, 4/1, in an apartment in Lumberton. The shooting happened just before noon on Thursday, March 25, in the southbound lanes of I-95 just north of Lumberton near the South Carolina border. The couple's car came close to the suspect's car while merging lanes. Floyd then pulled up next to the Eberly's car and opened fire. "I didn't see that he was going around me and I pushed him into the shoulder mistakenly. As soon as I was able, I gave him room to get back on the highway. No car contact, no nothing. I saw in my mirror that he was passing us to the right and gunshots were fired, our car was hit. My wife yelled my name. I asked if she was hit and she said, 'Yes,'" said Ryan Eberly. Julie was taken to the hospital where she died. The couple was on their way to the beach to celebrate their anniversary. Floyd has been taken to Robeson County Detention Center without bond.
SEPTA announced that it will be reopening Somerset station in Kensington on Monday, April 5. That station is on the Market-Frankford line. The transit agency closed down the station two weeks ago for cleaning and maintenance. It is at the epicenter of the city's drug problem. Trash, used needles, and human waste littered the station. It also clogged up the elevator rendering it inoperable. Many homeless live in and around the station. During the time that this station was closed, many of this activity moved to nearby Allegheny Station. SEPTA plans to have an on-site police station and security guards. The city is expected to do more to address the opioid epidemic and homeless population.
Two brothers, a Philadelphia police inspector and a former detective, have been arrested for chasing down a man with Asperger's syndrome and assaulting him last summer. 52-year-old Inspector James Smith and 53-year-old former detective Patrick Smith are each charged with misdemeanor assault, conspiracy, and reckless endangerment. It happened just after midnight on August 19, 2020, in a shopping center parking lot at Fairdale and Knights roads in Northeast Philadelphia. The brothers were chasing after the 27-year-old victim who has a form of autism. "They are further alleged to have chased to the victim on foot, grabbed him, pushed and slammed him into a wall and forced him to the ground. This activity caused a black eye and abrasions on the back on the victim's head, elbows and knees," said Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. The two brothers identified themselves as "Town Watch" and said they believed he was responsible for stealing cars in the area. Internal affairs could not find evidence for those claims. They said the two brothers stopped the victim without cause and in violation of department policies. James is suspended 30 days with intent to dismiss. Patrick retired in September 2020. |
