No Dem Endorsement for Philly DA Race; NJ 'Cleanup' Bill to Notify Parents; Man Runs Over Hose, Dies

The Philadelphia Democratic City Committee executive board has decided not to endorse a candidate for district attorney in the upcoming May primary. Incumbent DA Larry Krasner is facing a challenger in former city prosecutor Carlos Vega. Committee chairman Bob Brady said the party did not want to risk losing support for the other endorsed candidates on the ballot. The open race for District Attorney is only the second time in the past 45 years that the committee did not endorse the incumbent candidate in a citywide election. The last time happened in the last sheriff's race. Jewel Williams was facing multiple sexual harassment lawsuits. Krasner is not facing scandal, but critics condemn his progressive policies as too lenient on crime and not supportive of victims. Individual ward leaders may express support for either Krasner or Vega.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a "cleanup" bill to the the state's February recreational marijuana law. Language in the original law explicitly prevented police from contacting the parents or guardians of minor children who were caught possessing marijuana or alcohol for the first time. The minors would simply get a warning. Parental notification would not happen until the minor was caught multiple times. This new bill requires notification the first time. "Parents and guardians should be notified of a child's interaction and their potential harm through the use of alcohol and cannabis. These substances are not meant for children. Diligent notification to their parents will allow for intervention and resources to be employed to help stop underage substance abuse early," said the bill's sponsors.

The bill did not address an issue regarding civil rights after the discovery of marijuana, alcohol, or hashish on minors. For adults, the possession or smell of marijuana is no longer just cause to search a vehicle, because it is legal to possess. However, the February bill extends the same civil rights protection to all, even though it is illegal for those under 21 to have the substances. "The potential for criminal liability in any interaction will prevent officers from intervening in situations where underage criminal activity occurs, allowing underage marijuana and alcohol use to run rampant in our schools, in our parks and on our beaches," said the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police in a statement on Thursday.

A motorcyclist died after crashing into a firefighter's hose lying on the street in West Oak Lane on Sunday morning, 3/28. It happened around 3:30 a.m. on the 6700 block of Carlisle Street near North Broad Street. The Philadelphia Fire Department was fighting a fire at that location. The hose was attached to a fire hydrant and was stretched across Broad Street near 68th Street. The 34-year-old man was riding his motorcycle north on Broad when he ran over the hose. He was thrown about 300 feet and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released. Investigators are trying to determine if speed was a factor. No one was in the house that was on fire and no one else was injured.
