SEPTA Hiring 60 Security Guards; Retaining Wall on I-295 Collapses; Atlantic City BLM Mural Redo

SEPTA will be hiring 60 unarmed security guards to help secure parts of the Market-Frankford Line. There has been a rise in attacks in stations along that line. Posting guards will hopefully quell some of that activity and provide a safer environment for SEPTA workers and customers. Guards will be in place in late March or early April. There will also be a new vulnerable population action team to address homelessness, addiction, and mental illness.

A retaining wall along I-295 in South Jersey partially collapsed on Thursday afternoon, 3/25, causing safety and traffic concerns. It happened in the northbound lanes of I-295 over Essex Avenue in Bellmawr, New Jersey. The New Jersey Department of Transportation says that the right lane is closed and will be for some time as crews work to stabilize the wall. Drivers should expect traffic congestion in the area and Route 42 north as well. There is no time table for the completion of the work.

Atlantic City is going to redo the "Black Lives Matter" mural painted on a city street because the current one is creating confusion for drivers trying to drive down the road. City Council voted on Wednesday, 3/25, to spend $36,000 to repave and repaint a new tribute. The original was painted at an event in September 2020 by volunteers. "Black Lives Matter" was painted in large yellow block letters from curb-to-curb down Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. It obscured the double yellow lines in the middle of the road and the white lines on the side of the road. Acting Police Chief James Sarkos told the council that the mural violated state Department of Transportation regulations. It became such a problem that police have blocked off the street to traffic with barriers. The mural will be repainted in a way as not to confuse drivers. This site was chosen as a compromise with activists who originally wanted to paint on the Boardwalk. "It was an oversight on our part, and when we realized it, we fixed it," Mayor Marty Small said. "The words "Black Lives Matter" will still be on the street."
