| 8 People Shot and Injured at SEPTA Olney Station; SDP Delays School 1 Week; 2 Burned Bodies Found |

Philadelphia Police are investigating after 8 people were shot and injured in broad daylight in a mass shooting in North Philly on Wednesday afternoon, 2/17. It happened around 2:50 p.m. near Broad and Olney at SEPTA's Olney Transportation Station. Shots rang out at the busy bus station striking a range of seemingly unconnected people ages 17-71. Police were in the area and were able to take one person into custody. Two weapons were also recovered. It is not known yet if there were other shooters. There were initially seven victims, but an eighth victim walked into Einstein Medical Center on his own later. Six of the initial victims were taken to Einstein and one was taken to Temple University Hospital. A 71-year-old is in critical condition, the others were in stable condition.Â

- A 53-year-old man who was shot in the right leg
- A 36-year-old woman who was shot in the right thigh
- A 70-year-old man who was shot in the right thigh
- A 17-year-old girl who was shot in the right arm
- A 71-year-old man who was shot once in the stomach and multiple times in both legs
- A 48-year-old man suffered a graze wound to this stomach.
"It's very brazen. We had officers, whether it's from SEPTA, were out here. We were able to get someone in custody as quickly as we did because we had officers in the area working on another assignment," Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. "So it's not for our lack of presence out here, but I think it's very telling that folks that are willing to engage in these shootings are becoming more and more emboldened, regardless or not if they see us out here."
"This is happening far too often, this happened in broad daylight and we need everyone to come together to help us solve these cases," Outlaw said.
Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement, "I refuse to accept this emergency situation as normal. We must rise together with one clear and united moral voice against the evil act of violence. People have the right to travel between work and home, and around town, without the fear of being shot, and possibly killed, by reckless, indiscriminate gunfire."
The School District of Philadelphia announced on Wednesday, 2/17, that it has delayed the reopening of schools to in-person learning by one week from Monday, February 22 to Monday, March 1. School District Superintendent Dr. William said in a statement, "due to ongoing third-party mediation requested by the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, the start of our plans to slowly and safely begin phasing students and staff back into our schools will be delayed one week." Teachers were expected to return to school buildings last week, but did not after concerns over building safety and ventilation were raised by the union. PreK through 2nd grade will be the first students to return.

Philadelphia Police discovered a burning, naked body of woman in Fairmount Park early Wednesday morning, 2/17. It happened around 6 a.m on the 2300 block of Strawberry Mansion Drive. Firefighters were called. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman has not yet been identified. No arrests have been made. Earlier on Wednesday around 12:55 a.m., firefighters were called to Bellmore Street and Frankford Avenue in Kensington for a car fire. After the parked car was extinguished, a burned body was found in the driver's seat. Authorities were not able to determine the age or gender of the victim at the time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous
conditions could impact the Thursday morning, Thursday evening,
and Friday morning commutes.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow overspreads the area early Thursday
morning and could be heavy at times in the morning and early
afternoon. A change to sleet and freezing rain is expected by
late afternoon or evening. Light wintry precipitation will
likely continue into the daytime hours on Friday. |
