Trump Acquitted 57-43 in Impeachment Trial; Van der Veen 'Phillydelphia'; CO Poisoning in Camden

The U.S. Senate voted 57-43 to acquit President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial on Saturday, 2/13. 67 votes are needed to convict. Trump faced a single impeachment article of 'incitement of insurrection' for his actions leading up to the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Seven Republican Senators joined Democrats in voting to convict the former GOP President. They were Richard Burr of North Carolina, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, and Ben Sasse of Nebraska. This was the first impeachment trial of a President held after they had already left office, leading to questions of its constitutionality. If Trump was convicted, he faced disqualification from holding future office.

One of Donald Trump's defense lawyers, Michael van der Veen, began trending on social media on Saturday, 2/13, following a gaffe, or slip of the tongue, in his pronunciation of "Philadelphia." Van der Veen was arguing that if the prosecution wanted to call a witness, then the defense would call 100 witnesses and conduct all of the depositions back at van der Veen's law offices in Philadelphia. "None of these depositions should be done by Zoom. We didn't do this hearing by Zoom," van der Veen said. "These depositions should be done in person, in my office, in Phillydelphia. That's where it should be done." That prompted a laugh from the Senators. It's hard to tell whether it was the idea of doing in-person interviews or his pronunciation of "Phillydelphia" that caused the outburst.

Van der Veen's home in Chester County was vandalized on Friday night. The word "Traitor" was spray painted in block letters on the sidewalk at the end of his driveway.

One man is dead and another is injured after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning in their home in Camden, NJ, early Saturday morning, 2/13. Authorities were called to the 1500 block of Louis Street after a neighbor became worried that they hadn't seen the two men in their 50s for several hours. EMS workers entered the home and their personal CO detectors started to go off. The fire department was called to come remove the men. One was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was taken to Cooper University Hospital in critical condition. Police believe that a faulty heater may be the cause of the leak. CO is colorless and odorless. It can be detected with a device similar to a smoke alarm.
