Charge Refiled Against Inspector Bologna; Newborn Killed in Boulevard Crash; NJ Sports Spectators

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has refiled charges against a police officer accused of striking a protester with his baton during a protest near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in June 2020. Police Staff Inspector Joseph Bologna is once again charged with assault and other charges. "Philadelphians demand evenhanded justice and we are trying our very best to give them exactly that. Our oath to seek justice requires nothing less," Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said. Municipal Court Judge Henry Lewandowski III dropped the charges last month at a preliminary hearing saying that prosecutors did not present enough evidence of a crime. FOP Lodge #5 President John McNesby says, "This is not unexpected from a District Attorney, who craves media attention and is facing a primary challenge from inside his own party. DA Krasner is clearly running away from his failed record over the past three years and this latest decision to re-charge this officer is not based on facts or evidence. We will continue to support and defend Joe Bologna, a highly decorated and respected member of the Philadelphia police department." A preliminary hearing on the refiled charges is set for March 15.

A newborn was killed and an infant was injured in a car crash in Northeast Philadelphia on Thursday night, 2/11. It happened around 11 p.m. at Roosevelt Boulevard and Harbison Avenue. The 3-week-old girl was riding on her 19-year-old mother's lap in the passenger seat. The driver of that car was a 21-year-old woman. Her 4-month-old son was in a rear car seat. They collided with an SUV driven by a 29-year-old man. "The two vehicles were both on Harbison Avenue. One was going eastbound, one was going westbound, and when they crossed the boulevard in the southbound lanes, that's when they struck each other head-on," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. The two drivers and the infant suffered minor injuries. The 19-year-old was not injured. The newborn, identified as Nayeli Torres of National Park, New Jersey, was pronounced dead at Einstein Medical Center. For some reason, Torres was not placed in a second child seat that was in the back of the car. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Friday, 2/12, that a limited number of people will now be allowed to attend youth and high school sporting events in the state. School districts and other operators can now allow up to two parents or guardians per athlete to attend practices and games both indoors and outdoors. Indoor attendance cannot exceed 35% or a maximum of 150 total people.
