Operation Philly Special, Vaccines at Linc?; Gov Murphy in Quarantine; Bruce Springsteen DWI Arrest

Philadelphia city lawmakers unveiled a plan to utilize Lincoln Financial Field as a mass vaccination site. The proposal has been dubbed 'Operation Philly Special.' Philadelphia Councilmember Allan Domb is leading the group. "'Operation Philly Special' is the playbook that brings all of the city's assets to bear," Domb said. The group includes Councilmembers Cindy Bass, Katherine Gilmore Richardson, Derek Green, Mark Squilla, Kenyatta Johnson and Bobby Henon, as well as state Sen. Sharif Street, former congressman Bob Brady and ex-Mayor John Street. They believe the site could vaccinate 1,000s per day if they had the supply of doses. Mayor Kenney and his administration are reluctant to host a large clinic at the sports complex. They are worried that it would attract too many people from the surrounding areas outside of Philadelphia and end up taking vaccines away from city residents in need. Bob Brady countered saying, "There's such a thing as called an ID."

One of the city's priorities in the vaccination process is to keep it equitable and reach the city's minorities. They believe they can do that with smaller, community based clinics. A spokesperson for the Kenney administration said in a statement, "We ask Councilman Domb and other supporters this: are you deliberately trying to ensure that white privileged suburban residents of other counties and states are prioritized for vaccination over Black and brown taxpayers of Philadelphia? Because that is what this plan will do."

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is voluntarily quarantining after a family member has tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19. Murphy does not qualify as a close contact of this individual, but is taking action out of an abundance of caution. He tested negative on Wednesday, 2/10. The governor has cancelled all in-person events. Murphy had to quarantine back in October after two staff members tested positive.

"A member of the Governor's family recently tested positive for COVID-19. Per guidance from public health officials, the contact tracing process has begun to notify everyone who may have come into contact with the Governor's family member during the potential infection window," the governor's office said in a statement.

Bruce Springsteen was arrested for DWI last November at a small National Park in North Jersey. It happened on 11/14 at Gateway National Recreation Area. Springsteen was issued three summons by the US Park Police for DWI, reckless driving, and consuming alcohol in a closed area. The park is located on a small peninsula in Sandy Hook, NJ, that juts out into the bay. A spokesperson for Gateway National Recreation Area said Springsteen was cooperative about the process. Springsteen just appeared in a Super Bowl commercial for Jeep. That ad has been put on hold by the company.

Sports
The NBA issued a statement on Wednesday, 2/10, saying that "all teams will play the national anthem in keeping with longstanding league policy." This announcement comes after it was revealed that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban had instructed the team not to play the anthem before home games at American Airlines Center this season. The Mavericks had not played a home game in front of fans until Monday, 2/8, when 1,500 vaccinated essential workers attended the game. Cuban did not say why he stopped the anthem practice, but the Mavericks will start playing it again beginning with Wednesday's home game against the Atlanta Hawks.

"We respect and always have respected the passions people have for the anthem and our country," the billionaire businessman said in a statement. "I have always stood for the anthem with the hand over my heart - no matter where I hear it played. But we also hear the voices of those who do not feel the anthem represents them. We feel they also need to be respected and heard, because they have not been heard.

"The hope is that those who feel passionate about the anthem being played will be just as passionate in listening to those who do not feel it represents them."
