| Mummers Protest on New Year's Day in South Philly; Vandals Arrested on NYE; 2020 Deadliest in Years |

The Mummer's Parade was officially canceled this New Year's Day due to the ongoing coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. However, many groups and brigades took to the streets of South Philadelphia on Friday, 1/1, to celebrate the New Year, to 'protest' the cancelation of the 120-year tradition, and to exercise their first amendment rights. In July 2020, the city issued a moratorium on permits for all large scale public events through February 2021. That ban included innumerable events like concerts and festivals, races and walks, and parades such as the Thanksgiving Day parade. The Mummer's Parade has been held annually since 1901. It was canceled twice before; in 1919 following World War I and in 1934 due to the Great Depression. City officials urged people not to gather due to public heath concerns. The larger divisions of the Mummers are also not participating. A flyer was distributed around 2nd Street (Two Street) asking people to avoid the protest. A Facebook event announcing the events had several thousand RSVP's. Hundreds of revelers have been marching around South Philly since late morning. There is no exact route. Individual brigades have been going up and down various streets dancing and playing music. Philadelphia Police have been monitoring the situation.

Several people were arrested for vandalizing two federal buildings and carrying incendiary devices in Center City on New Year's Eve, 12/31. A group of about 50 individuals wearing black were seen near the Robert Nix Federal building on the 900 block of Market Street around 8:30 p.m. A 25-year-old male threw a brick through a window of the building. Several others broke windows and spray painted the building. He was arrested along with a 24-year-old man, 23-year-old women, and a 31-year-old woman. The Federal Detention Center at 7th and Arch was defaced with anti-police and anti-prison graffiti. A sheriff's van was also defaced and had its windows broken. A 25-year-old man, 26-year-old woman, and a 22-year-old woman were arrested carrying various bottles containing flammable liquids and other chemicals. "During a search incident to the arrest, they recovered numerous Molotov cocktails and some other devices which haven't been identified," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Mike Cram said.
UPDATE: 25-year-old Adam McVicker of Coatesville, 24-year-old Dustin Callahan of Farmingdale, N.J., 23-year-old Allison Donohue of Wallingford, and 31-year-old Josey Augustine of Royersford were charged with criminal mischief and related offenses in relation to the Robert Nix Federal building incident. 25-year-old Jacob Robotin of Willow Grove, 22-year-old Sydney Miller of Philadelphia, 26-year-old and Meredith Tooker were charged with attempted arson, risking catastrophe, having an incendiary device, conspiracy, and related offenses in connection to the Federal Detention Center incident.
The gun violence continued overnight across Philadelphia into this new year. Police say that at least 10 people were shot and three were killed. Philadelphia saw nearly 500 homicides and almost 2,300 shooting victims in 2020. Both statistics are the highest seen in decades and represent large increases over recent years. There were 499 homicides recorded last year, up 40% from 2019. It was the deadliest year since 1990 when there were 504. Shooting victims were up 55% from 2019. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw says that arguments and retaliation are the biggest reasons for the shootings ahead of narcotics activity. Public officials all say that each part of the criminal justice system needs to step up and work together to solve the problem. |
