Officers ID'd in Kensington Christmas Shooting; Tacony-Palmyra Bridge Crash; Two Shot in SW Philly

Police have officially identified 43-year-old Jesus Perez as the man shot and killed by police early Christmas morning after he opened fire on a crowd in Kensington. Perez's 15-year-old son, Jeremy Perez, was shot and killed and his 17-year-old nephew, Giovanny Capulin, were wounded by his gunfire. Philadelphia police have identified the two officers involved as 39-year-old Timothy Strano, a six-year veteran, and 45-year-old Leggie Thompson, a 9-month rookie. The officers arrived on the scene around 12:30 a.m. 12/25 on the 3300 block of Emerald Street. They had been called to a report of a fight over a parking spot. They found a crowd pushing and throwing punches. Perez allegedly pulled a gun and shot into the crowd, hitting the two teens. Officers then fired and struck Perez. He was taken to Temple University were he was pronounced dead. His son also died at the hospital. Capulin has since been released from the hospital.

Police found a gun at the scene that reportedly was stolen from Virginia. Initially, family members disputed that Perez possessed a gun and would have discharged it recklessly. However, after viewing police body cam footage they changed their view. "We want to thank the police for doing the best that they could in a tragic situation," said Perez's sister, Diana Cuevas. "I don't want to share any more details. The police did what they could do and that's it." Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has asked Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw not to release the police body cam footage until the investigation is complete.

The Tacony-Palmyra Bridge was shut down after a deadly multi-vehicle crash on Monday night, 12/28. It happened around 7 p.m. on the NJ side of the bridge. Several vehicles were involved. One person was killed. Five others were taken to the hospital with injuries. The bridge will be closed while the investigation into the cause of the crash in under way.

UPDATE: The crash started when two cars that appeared to be speeding headed westbound clipped each other. One car was sent into the eastbound lanes and struck a Honda Civic head on. The driver of the Civic was killed. Two other vehicles were also hit in the crash. No charges have been announced at this time.

Philadelphia police are investigating after a double shooting left two injured in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Southwest Philadelphia on Monday evening, 12/28. It happened around 7 p.m. on the 1200 block of South 51st Street. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the head. A 21-year-old man was shot multiple times. They were both taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition. No arrests have been made.
