A frozen-solid dead humpback whale washed ashore on a beach in Ocean County on Christmas Day. The 31-foot, 15-ton was found on the beach in Barneget Light on Long Beach Island near the Barneget Inlet. Bon Schoelkopf, co-director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, said that the cause of death is unknown, but there are no signs of physical injury. The animal may have gotten ill. Usually a large whale like this would be cut into pieces and removed from the beach for study, but because it is frozen that is not possible. "It's frozen solid," Schoelkopf said. "There's not much we can do. Cutting into a frozen whale like that isn't going to be easy." He said, "We needed to do something with it and we couldn't leave it there any longer; there were just too many people coming near it." They used two front-end loaders to dig a hole and then rolled the whale into it. They then covered the carcass up with sand.

Four people were rushed to the hospital after carbon monoxide exposure in their home in Delaware County on Monday afternoon, 12/28. It happened on the 4200 block of Garret Road in Drexel Hill. Fire officials say that the lawnmower was running inside their garage causing the CO buildup which leaked into their home. When first responders arrived, one person was unconscious. They regained consciousness when brought out into the outside air. There were two adults and two children home at the time. They were all taken to the hospital and are expected to be ok. It could have been much worse if they had been exposed any longer. The fire chief reminds residents to keep all gas generators or other engines and running motors outside.

A large water main break in Allentown is causing problems as Lehigh County Authority continues repairs. The 36-inch main broke around 3 a.m. on Sunday, 12/27, on Devonshire Road between Mack Blvd. and 12th Street. Service was knocked out in the area and water gushed down the street. A large section of the road collapsed. The road will be closed for a while as repairs are made. Three homes were deemed unsafe and residents were evacuated. A boil water advisory is in effect for parts of Allentown as repairs are made.
