| Congress Agrees on Relief Bill, #SaveOurStages Act; Deadly Northeast Car Crash; Kensington Shootings |

Congressional leaders have signaled that they have reached agreement on a new COVID-19 relief bill on Sunday evening, 12/20. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tweeted, "Congress has just reached an agreement. We will pass another rescue package ASAP. More help is on the way." Both the Senate and the House are expected to vote on the $900 billion bill on Monday, 12/21. The bill will provide a direct payment of $600 to most Americans. Payment amounts will taper starting at $75,000 income for individuals. There will also be $300 per week of supplemental unemployment benefits. The temporary UE benefits last 10 weeks. The bill also includes money to reopen schools safely, the distribution of vaccines, PPP for businesses, transit systems, bars/restaurants and more.
The National Independent Venue Association said on Sunday night that the Saves Our Stages Act is included in this relief bill. The act includes "$15 billion in dedicated funding for live venues, independent movie theaters, and cultural institutions." According to NIVA, 90% of venues would close for good unless helped by Congress. Live entertainment was the first to shutdown and will be the last to reopen. This legislation will allow the stages to survive until the crowds can come back. Dayna Frank, owner and CEO of Minneapolis' legendary First Avenue concert venue and board president of the National Independent Venue Association, said: "We're thrilled that Congress has heard the call of shuttered independent venues across the country and provided us a crucial lifeline by including the Save Our Stages Act in the COVID-19 Relief Bill. We're also incredibly grateful that this bill provides Pandemic Unemployment Assistance which will help the millions of people who lost their jobs through no fault of their own during this economic crisis. We urge swift passage of this legislation, which will assist those in the greatest need and ensure the music lives on for generations to come."

One man is dead and two others are in critical condition after a single car crash in Northeast Philadelphia early Sunday morning, 12/20. It happened around 1:30 a.m. on the on the 700 block of Franklin Mills Circle. The three men were in a 2007 Chrysler. The vehicle lost control, jumped the curb, and eventually went airborne. It landed on the roof on the Kpot Korean BBQ & Hot Pot restaurant before falling upside down in the parking lot. 26-year-old John Cybulski was rushed to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m. A 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old man were also taken to nearby hospitals in critical condition. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Philadelphia Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed in Kensington early Sunday morning, 12/20. It happened before 5 a.m. outside the Rite Aid at North American Street and West Lehigh Avenue. A 31-year-old man was found shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A car was found in the intersection with flat tires and air bags deployed.
Also, in Kensington early Sunday morning, a man is in critical condition after being shot in the head. Philadelphia Police responded to reports of a person with a gun on the 300 block of East Lehigh Avenue. They arrived to find a 2005 Jeep on fire. The Jeep had crashed into a parked car and burst into flames. The man was taken to the hospital with burns and the gunshot to the head.
Sports
The NHL and NHLPA have agreed to a 56-game 2021 season starting on January 13 and ending May 8 followed by playoffs. Training camp will start December 31 for teams that didn't make the 2020 playoffs; January 3 for everyone else. The divisions will be realigned for one year. The Philadelphia Flyers will be in the East Division along with the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.
“The National Hockey League looks forward to the opening of our 2020-21 season,†Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “While we are well aware of the challenges ahead, as was the case last spring and summer, we are continuing to prioritize the health and safety of our participants and the communities in which we live and play.â€
